Seven killed in Gaza air strike
Israel has launched missile strikes on Gaza, killing seven Palestinians, hours after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon vowed to retaliate for a suicide bombing.

A leading member of Islamic Jihad and three other members of the militant group were among those killed.

Israel later fired missiles into an area which the army said was used by militants to launch rockets.

Five Israelis were killed in a suicide bombing in Hadera on Wednesday. Islamic Jihad said it carried out the attack.

4. gee, i hope this doesnt provoke a series of suicide bombings
leading up to the administration's deadline for action against Syria October 31st. I certainly wouldn't want to see Israeli govt attack Syria on Nov 1st, and then drag the US into war on the 11th.

5. Personally, I believe the business with Syria...
is nothing more than saber rattling.

While Syria doesn't possess nukes, it does have an ample supply of either biological and/or chemical munitions and the ability to deliver them to most of Israel.

While it isn't tit-for-tat M.A.D., it can get pretty ugly if they feel their existence is threatened. Israel is turned into a bio-chem wasteland and Syria is turned into green glass. Proximity to other non-combatants will insure lots of collateral damage.

Then there is the long time Syrian ally, Russia:

Russia says will defend Syria against UN sanctions

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia, Syria's close ally since Cold War times, will do all it takes to block any attempt to slap economic sanctions against Damascus, a Foreign Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

-snip-

Russia, a veto-wielding permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, angered the United States earlier this year by announcing plans to sell advanced missile systems to Syria, which Washington has accused of having links to terrorism.

6. Russia's involvement is indeed frightening
especially when you consider

a) How hated Bush is around the world.

b) How weak he is at the moment and is likely to remain.

Islamic Jihad's field commander in northern Gaza, Shadi Mohanna, died along with his assistant, Mohammed Ghazaineh.

Islamic Jihad said one of its suicide bombers had struck in Hadera to avenge the Israeli army's killing on Monday of Luay Saadi, one of its leading figures in the occupied West Bank - a man whom the Israelis accused of masterminding suicide attacks.
