Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger painted a grim picture of California's political culture, accusing Democrats and "union bosses" of reflexively blocking government reform and caring more about bringing down the governor than solving the state's problems.
"I want to move things forward, and to them, it works like - they want to destroy me," Schwarzenegger said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press. "It's a self-serving government that's all about them rather than serving the people, and it's wrong."


In a 30-minute interview in a hotel suite overlooking Long Beach harbor, Schwarzenegger - tieless and munching almonds - took questions a range of topics, from the constraints of so-called "town hall meeting" campaign appearances to the activities of his wife, First Lady Maria Shriver. Early in the current Bush administration, there was a pamphlet on foreign policy that likened the United States' world position to this image, and it even had a drawing of it. Reason prevailed, and the pamphlet was withdrawn and shrouded in the fog of history.

It was very telling: the claim of obvious superiority being unfairly restrained by swarms of inferiors. This is truly the claim of the monarchic right: they are superior to others, and people should accept their place. Others should serve ME.

The cocksure arrogance of the individual is deeply rooted in the psyche of this country, and although it has given us great self-reliance and other admirable traits, the dark side of it is extreme selfishness and greed. If one is truly superior, one should NEVER expect or need the help of others and one should expect some annoying impediments from the peons. This is where this ugly construct fails: they want the benefits of a specialized society and the help of pluralist institutions, but they still want to not have to give a single thing back to the community.
