Mexico Ratifies War Crimes Tribunal Treaty
Mexico Ratifies War Crimes Tribunal Treaty

Saturday October 29, 2005 12:31 AM

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Mexico became the 100th country to ratify the treaty founding the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal, which the United States has opposed.

Mexico's U.N. Ambassador Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo delivered his nation's ratification in a ceremony at the U.N. secretariat. The only significance of Mexico becoming the 100th signatory was symbolic, because the International Criminal Court came into being in 2002 after 60 countries had signed its founding treaty.

The United States argues that the court could be used for frivolous or politically motivated prosecutions of American troops.

The issue appears to be the latest point of contention between Mexico and the U.S. Relations between the neighbors have been strained by Mexico's opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and over immigration policies.

The issue appears to be the latest point of contention between Mexico and the U.S. Relations between the neighbors have been strained by Mexico's opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq and over immigration policies.

In addition, Mexico had already made it clear earlier this year that it would not sign a pact to grant U.S. military personnel immunity from the court.

7. who cares what Mexico does
I mean who cares what the rest of the world thinks? I believe that was the Republican cry before the war started. They did not care what "old Europe" thought. They made it a point to try and marginalize the entire world. Well guess what happens when you do that, you are all by yourself with the rest of the world on the side line not playing your game. The US govt. and republicans have no business caring now, it is to late. I say good for Mexico, I hope Canada signs soon if they have not already done so.

As far as the US argument goes: "The United States argues that the court could be used for frivolous or politically motivated prosecutions of American troops." Would those frivolous cases have anything to do with that one place down in Cuba or that one place in Iraq, or that piece of paper, Geneva something, that Gonzales feels is cute but useless.
