Schwarzenegger Univision Ads Questioned
Schwarzenegger Univision Ads Questioned

By Associated Press
October 29, 2005, 10:24 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's special-election campaign bought nearly $1 million in advertising time from Univision, a Spanish-language TV network whose chairman is his biggest single donor, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The campaign bought no time from rival network Telemundo, which did not donate to the campaign, according to campaign finance reports cited by the Los Angeles Times.

Univision's A. Jerrold Perenchio has contributed $4.8 million to Schwarzenegger campaign committees since 2002, including $1.5 million on Oct. 4, according to the reports.

In the four weeks that ended Oct. 22, the governor's campaign to support initiatives on the Nov. 8 special election ballot spent $983,487 at Univision stations.

1. So what's the question? . . .
Univision gives 100% more money to Schwarzenegger than does Telemundo, so Schwarzenegger buys all his advertising from Univision. Is this a wise move by Schwarzenegger? Probably not. What value is there in ignoring those potential voters who may only watch Telemundo? But then, no one I know ever claimed Schwarzenegger is politically astute.

Tempest in a teapot. Tempestad en una tetera.

4. That's a 'roid side effect...
Atrophied genitalia.

Jury's still out on the connection between atrophied brain tissue and 'roid use... some scientists claim that atrophied brain tissue CAUSES 'roid use, and others claim it's the RESULT.

Federal funding for a major study is not, thus far, forthcoming, which is too bad.

ENQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!

heeheehee...

5. a little background on Perenchio
In 1998 he wrote a check for $1.5 million to help defeat English for the Children, a California referendum that would have halted bilingual education in the state. Although Perenchio, an Italian-American, is known for his support of immigrants, opponents pointed out that he has a financial interest in keeping Hispanic kids speaking Spanish -- the less English they know, the fewer TV stations they have to choose from. Perenchio an anamoly in Hollywood: Unlike most of his fellow executives in the entertainment industry, he makes almost all of his campaign contributions to Republicans. I don't have a problem with his spending his money to defeat an anti billingual education referendum, it's just the motive behind his support I have an issue with.
