BAGHDAD, Iraq - Six American soldiers were killed in separate attacks Monday and a Marine died in action the day before, making October the deadliest month for U.S. troops in
Iraq since January. U.S. jets struck insurgent targets near the Syrian border and at least six people were killed.

Four soldiers from the Army's Task Force Baghdad soldiers died Monday when their patrol struck a roadside bomb in Youssifiyah, 12 miles south of Baghdad in an area known as the "triangle of death."

Two other soldiers from the 29th Brigade Combat Team were also killed in a bombing Monday near Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad. The U.S. military also said a Marine was killed Sunday near Amiriyah, 25 miles west of Baghdad.

Those deaths raised the death toll for October to more than 90, the highest monthly total since January when 107 American service members died. The latest deaths brought to 2,025 the number of U.S. service members who have died since the Iraq war began in March 2003.

5. That was the beginning of the last throes. This is the middle of the last
throes. When we get to the end of the last throes the war will be over. Or at least the last throes will be over. Well any way there won't be any more throes and if there are we will call them something else. How's that? Whew!

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The US military announced the death of another soldier in Iraq, bringing October losses to 94, the fourth biggest monthly toll since the invasion, after a car bomb killed 18 people in the normally quiet city of Basra.

The soldier's death in a roadside bombing near the Sunni Arab insurgent stronghold of Fallujah on Monday also brought the overall US toll to at least 2,022 since the invasion in March 2003, according to an AFP tally.

Monday evening's car bombing in the southern port city of Basra ripped through a market packed with shoppers ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr later this week, and had apparently targeted a police patrol.

Eighteen people died and 59 were wounded according to a revised, lower toll, the province's chief medical officer Raad Daud Salman said, while governor Mohammed Mosbah al-Wali added that two suspects had been arrested.
