Dubya-Cheney ties
frayed by scandal

'There has been some distance for some time'

BY THOMAS M. DeFRANK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU CHIEF

Vice President Cheney may be losing influence over President Bush as controversies surrounding the Iraq war strain their relationship.

WASHINGTON - The CIA leak scandal has peeled back the veil on the most closely held White House secret of all: the subtle but unmistakable erosion in the bond between President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Multiple sources close to Bush told the Daily News that while the vice president remains his boss' valued political partner and counselor, his clout has lessened - primarily as a result of issues arising from the Iraq war.

"The relationship is not what it was," a presidential counselor said. "There has been some distance for some time."

....

"The public side of the relationship hasn't changed," a close presidential loyalist said. "The private side of the relationship is not to the degree it used to be. Cheney has been his gray-haired senior adviser. That's the void that needs to be filled."

20. Welcome to DU! I love it, too.
They deserve each other, don't they?

Help us shove them both into the trashbin of history (as the festering, fetid garbage they are)...

Visualize IMPEACHMENT!!!!!!
And then go DO something about it.

Does it mean Chimpy's waking up, or Dicky's backing off because Chimpy's starting to believe his own publicity & act like he's actually the president, or what ??

I'm so confused !!!

7. It's just business as
usual, what people tend to forget is that Bush was a total and utter failure in perhaps all of his business ventures - let him go it alone, it will only emphasize that he is just the puppet....

11. That was my first thought
This is bullshit. They realize that Cheney is seen as the bad guy, and so to distance him from Bush, they plant these stories. This way when it becomes obvious to all that Cheney was in the middle of all of the Plame stuff and selling the war, Bush can just shake his head and say, "Oh, my...I had no idea he was doing that."

And people will buy it.

24. I don't think we can rule out that Cheney & Co kept a lot of stuff from
the Chimp b/c he is, after all, just a mumbling, bumbling puppet and failure at all his ventures.

Whether Chimpy knew about the illegal activities going on in Cheney's office or not, if Rove and Cheney are indicted next and DeLay, Frist, and other corrupt members of BushCo are soon gone, Chimpy will be a very ineffective lame duck.

One thing that is telling is, Cheney is putting the lower down architects of the Iraq War in chiefs' positions; i.e. Addington taking the place of LIBBY. By news reports, Addington had a lot to do with fraud.

32. Bush told the lies necessary to sell the war
He also, if you believe the "insider's" story was mad as hell at Rove when he found out about the outing.

If this is true, Bush lied repeatedly about not knowing Rove was involved and may be guilty of obstructing justice if not perjury.

None are flattering and point to his incompetence, but then we knew that all along. Could there be a Cheney/Rove war? Every rat for themselves on the sinking ship of state?

Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 09:51 AM by grytpype
Because it really is Cheney's fault that we're in this mess. Bush is just a dimwitted figurehead, Cheney was telling him what to do and his advice was horrible.

I know the buck is supposed to stop in the Oval Office, but in this case a lot of the blame does rest with Cheney. Let him resign in disgrace, it would be good for America.

28. Actually it is completely Bush's fault. He outsourced his pResidency
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 10:50 AM by Pithy Cherub
to the king of no-bid contracts, Cheney. Cheney over promised and underdelivered on what he could achieve. Bush now realizing the outsourcing is going badly needs to insource for a less expensive replacement in time to save his broken pResidency. Bush did not check or hold anyone accountable for the mistakes. Cheney will resign and Bush is currently courting his newest Frankenstein/ette Vice pResident. Cheney just believed he could fly that close to the Sun and his Halliburton-made wax seals would hold.;)

With Cheney in charge, it's all incontrovertibly evil.

25. Imagine Bush in a padded cell
I figure if Chimpy's handlers all go to jail or resign, Chimpy's gonna lose it. He knows he's not smart enough to do the job himself and I doubt that the military even lets him have the nuclear football. CapitolHillBlue.com reports that Chimpy's handlers and staff are getting so frustrated with his constant tirades that some of them are ready to quit.

Not to mention how many bad stories about Chimpy are leaking out of the White House. I think if Chimpy's staff all goes away, he'll be under his desk sucking his thumb and whimpering within the hour.

I can't imagine that even W's supporters really think he calls the plays....okay maybe they do they obviously will fall for anything.

This is actually very scarey. What if W really wants to go out and make the actual decisions? Dick may be just that, a dick, but he does have the ability at least to make such calls-W, not so much.

It could be Rover, but I think it is Card, for some reason. The verbiage sounds EXACTLY like him. And Rover has been distracted.

I think both those quotes (Presidential Counselor/close presidential loyalist) came from the same guy...Andy!!

He wanted to leave a year or two ago, but duty called, and no one else with sufficient talent would take the lousy job.

I think he is pushing the issue to get some closure. Maybe his minister-wife is telling him it is time to 'do the right thing.'

34. Think this is SPIN to make perception of Bush is separate from Cheney?
Not even an anonymous source, just unnamed.
Includes visual of Cheney's gray hair.
Every time we see Cheney with elderly gray hair we will feel compassion, forgiveness, and his full responsibility.

This gives the impression that ...

. Bush is making his own decisions,
. implying that Bush is strong minded.
. Impressing that Bush is NOT INVOLVED with the Plame scandal,
. since, if Bush is caught the rest cannot get PARDONs.
. When Cheney leaves, the Plame blame leaves with him.

This is spin, early spin.
Used to be vote early, and vote often.
Now it's spin early and spin often.
