Donald Rumsfeld, US defence secretary, told ABC television that Sunday had been a "tragic day" and added: "In a long, hard war we are going to have tragic days. The work in Iraq is difficult. It is tough. It is going to take time."


Nonetheless, US commanders believe that the casualties are sustainable. Speaking before Sunday's helicopter attack, Lieutenant General Richard Sanchez, the commander of US forces in the country, described the surge in violence since the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan as "strategically and operationally insignificant".

I wonder how each and every GI returning home in a body bag at midnight feels about being "operationally and stratigellacy" insignificant?

It would seem to me that that would just mean more troops for the resistance to blow up.
