NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - A senior judge in the Iraqi city of Najaf has been kidnapped and killed by what his deputy said Tuesday were gunmen carrying out the orders of ousted president Saddam Hussein.

Aref Aziz said he was kidnapped along with Mohan Jaber al-Shoueili Monday. Aziz said he was released after Shoueili was shot dead.

"The gunmen said they were carrying out a judgment from Saddam," Aziz told Reuters.

4. a little more from another yahoo link...
<snip>Shuwaili had signed onto the decision to create the Baath Investigative Commission, made up of four attorneys who probe complaints before raising them with an investigative judge.

The commission, created on August 10 upon a decision by the municipal council, was meant to prosecute former regime loyalists, mainly members of the former ruling Baath party. It has so far received 400 complaints.

The commission -- unique in Iraq (news - web sites) -- has issued 160 arrest warrants, upon which 50 people have been detained.
