Jumping party lines, Nagin (New Orleans mayor) backs Jindal
JORDAN, BROUSSARD SUPPORT BLANCO

Tuesday November 04, 2003

By Frank Donze
and Brian Thevenot%%par%%Staff writers

In a bold and potentially risky move, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin crossed party lines Monday to endorse Republican Bobby Jindal, who is locked in a tight governor's race with Lt. Gov. Kathleen Blanco, the Democratic standard bearer in the Nov. 15 runoff.

Nagin's announcement marks a historic break with tradition for African-American leaders of the state's largest city and a major advance in Jindal's efforts to reach beyond his conservative base. Democratic candidates for governor in the past have regarded as automatic the backing of the mayor of New Orleans, where nearly seven of 10 voters are registered Democrats. With that history in mind, Nagin, a lifelong Democrat, called his decision "an extremely tough choice" that came only after soul-searching and extensive research.

"We're at a time in our history right now where we can move our state forward as never seen before or we can continue to languish in mediocrity and complacency," Nagin said, flanked by Jindal and his supporters who gathered outside a park across from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. "I choose to move forward and help write this history, not just be part of it."

With Democrats like these, who need Republicans?

1. well there it goes
even a small fraction of the African-American vote lost due to this endorsement will have devastating consequences.

2. What did they promise him?
A seat in the House or Senate? Which will somehow evaporate after the election?

3. Yup, things are REALLY
getting strange. Whatever is going on it is getting to the point where you wonder if this is worth fighting for. Can these all possibly be moles moving their way through the system all these years, or has something infected them? Its just getting WAY too weird and it seems like the deck has been stacked completely against the People. They have made a TOTAL mess of our Country, yet "Democrats" by the dozen endorse their policies and their actual candidates. I think I'm going to have to come up with an alternative strategy in order to save my sanity.

6. For an insider who 'knows' what's really happening in politics and
how terribly evil the GOP party is. And what terrible liars they are. And how it's a complete lie about a 'liberal press'. How could a Democrat in the position to know the 'truth' ever support a Repuke?

There's only one answer. In fact the Dem., in this case Nagin, is really a deep undercover NSA/GOP agent who has infiltrated the Dem. Party who is just waiting for his order to commit terrorism in the United States of America! The only answer!

7. Yeah heard about that yesterday...if Jindal wins then it was rigged...
....the numbers after our primary showed Blanco getting at least 55% of the vote with the endorsements of the other Dems who ran...she's a DINO....and I'll have to hold my nose to vote for her...but HE IS INSANE and if he wins then it's official that the fix was in with the two of them gettin' in the runoff anyway....this state didn't vote for William Jefferson or Cleo Fields both minorities who I DID vote for...yet neither came close to winning.....there's just NO WAY in my opinion that Jindal could win on his own merits regardless of his party affiliation because he's not white...unless it's rigged...I know personally that the fundies are supporting him to not appear to be the rascist hypocrites they are! This whole thing STINKS all the way around....he's a fundie wacko...and she's a DINO who didn't endorse Mary Landrieu last fall...I've seen Breaux commercials supporting her...but Mary isn't backing her...and I don't blame her!! x(

9. Also, BOLD/(Jim) Singleton endorse him as well
Typically, all of the Dem vote will go to the Democratic candidate in the general or what they used to call the "second primary" back when I was in Louisiana.

Keep in mind that Jindal is a person of color (Indian), which probably will cost at least a few African-American votes.

Also, there were reports that the (much vilified here) John Breaux was pulling out the stops to get his Blanco elected. (Whatever else you may think of Breaux, he is--unlike Zell Miller--a Democrat when push comes to shove).

10. I will support John Breaux if he runs next year!
.....while he will not give us everything we want, he will not stab his party in the back like "Dixicrat Miller"!

11. I am really nervous about this
The election might come down to New Orleans, which almost always goes to the Dems. Not sure how much impact Nagin's endorsement will have. He endorsed white Democrat Randy Ewing in the primary and Ewing came in 5th or 6th place. But Jindal also has endorsements from several other prominent blacks and some black activist groups. Also, Jindal is a minority and I wonder how many minority voters will cross party lines to vote for him.

This one's gonna be a nail-biter. Stay tuned.
