Small States Get Big Share of Terror Grants
Charleston, W. Va. - The Homeland Security Department announced the largest anti-terrorism grants ever yesterday, and American Samoa, a tiny U.S. territory 3,000 miles west of Hawaii, received nearly 20 times as much per capita as New York State.

Wyoming, the least populous state in the country, got more than seven times as much per capita as California, the state with the most people.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge released $2.2 billion in grants yesterday using a controversial formula that benefits low population states and, New York officials and lawmakers say, shortchanges areas most at risk for terrorist attacks, such as New York City.

"Why is the secretary using a formula that he has already said doesn't work?" asked Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan).

1. I think Hawaii deserves the money
since we have all the military bases, Pacific Central Command, the head of the Navy's 5th fleet and we are at the forefront for the US border.

However, Wyoming doesn't deserve jack shit. Nor does American Samoa.

3. Well, Wyoming is a border state
... with lots of international travelers and targets of strategic and political significance.
Oh... wait... :freak:

Well, perhaps it has the most radical Islamists per capita?

Nooo...?

Well, Cheney has lived there for "convenience". :eyes:

to see how this money breaks down along political line. My guess is that red states and areas received the most money as a reward for their loyalty. Places up for grabs received a tidy sum in hopes of buying their support.

Staunchly Dem areas, like large cities, received the least per capita because, who cares — they're Dems.

I really hope someone does an analysis of this.

10. BTW, did I see Tom Ridge in California over the weekend?
Talking about the fires? WTF does the director of Homeland Security have to do with forest fires? (I was out of town and only caught his mug in shirtsleeves standing in front of some burned down house on the tube in a restaurant with no sound.)
