2. Shit, they're taking control of the night
IIRC, Charlie controlled the night, too.

The most important advantage we have had over guerilla insurgency in Iraq was that we were supposed to be in control of the night.

15. Thanks for the Yahoo article
Found this interesting:

Meanwhile, Spain, one of America's closest allies in Iraq (news - web sites), announced it was withdrawing most of its diplomats from Baghdad because of deteriorating security, as guerrillas fired grenades at a hotel filled with Americans in the north and killed a U.S. soldier in the capital.

Foreign Minister Ana Palacio said the Spanish Embassy will remain open, however all but four of the 29-member staff would leave, most for Amman, Jordan. Spain has about 1,300 soldiers in Iraq and was one of the strongest supporters of the U.S.-led invasion,

"We have taken staff out of Baghdad temporarily given that it is a very complicated moment," Palacio said in Berlin. Spaniards working for the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority will stay, the Spanish Defense Ministry said without giving their number.

Spain became the third coalition member to withdraw diplomats from Iraq due to stepped up insurgent attacks. Last month, Bulgaria and the Netherlands moved their diplomats to Jordan, also citing worsening security. (snip/...)

Bush has spent so much time, even Jeb, courting Aznar.

10. Does anyone recall a story back in late May/early June
from a Mideast news source - but that was never carried elsewhere or confirmed -

that essentially claimed that Saddam Hussien had - in preparation for the American attack - purged top folks and placed very loyal folks - spread them around - to start a set of coordinated attacks during 'holidays' - that at the time were speculated to be the 4th of July holidays.

Since the first coordinated bombing attack - that story (I barely remember it and wouldn't know where to look for it) has been kicking around in the back of my memory. I think it was OUR speculation that the 'holiday' refered to the US up and coming 4th of July... (nice western lens on reading stories)....

27. No, and No--if that makes any sense.
The news of those just dropped off, but it was reported that there were no injuries or casualties.

The reporting in this instance, however, seems more aggressive. Television news is actually paying attention, perhaps because the explosion(s) happened inside the compound this time.

Huge Explosions Rock Central Baghdad

Tuesday November 4, 2003 5:01 PM

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Huge explosions rocked central Baghdad late Tuesday and smoke could be seen rising close to the compound used as a headquarters of the U.S. occupation.

Four large explosions could be heard about 7:45 p.m. along the Tigris River. The smoke appeared coming from the northern end of the sprawling U.S. compound near the al-Jamhuriya Bridge which crosses the Tigris.

There was no immediate word available from U.S. military officials.

<snip>

Not much more.....yet. :evilfrown:

On Edit: More from KATU (ABC 2)

<snip>

The U.S. military command confirmed two impacts in the city center but did not say where. Iraqi police said two of the rounds impacted in the U.S.-controlled "green zone," a one-square-mile area along the western bank of the Tigris where the coalition headquarters is located.

42. My Tiny Voice Here On The Arab Street Suggests New And BIG Money
And arms flowing into Iraq. We are into the second week of Ramadan and tradtionally money goes to Plaestine during this holy month but I will submit that below the radar Arab states are now funding Iraq.

NOT covert forces pouring across the borders but ARAB money assisting the Iraqis. Big difference and one our state department is unwilling to recognize. You guys do realize that Saudi Arabia is the worlds largest arms buyer. Sorry no link but it is a fact.

Hey I just live here in the ME and I don't purport to be an expert but I think the US is being played by the house of Saud and Iran.

It is complex (as in aren't the Saudis our allies and don't they all hate the Iranians and of course Saddam) but in chess and war all bets are off.

Bets are off folks. The worm is turning.

made about just this thing in a PBS interview was that there were regional dynamics in play here. Syria and Iran have a stake in keeping things going in Iraq because they are worried that once Iraq is calm the US will start in on them.

But I think we should keep our eyes on Saudi Arabia. One should always follow the money and they have it in spades. And they are in deep internal turmoil. There has been chatter for months about the house of Saud breaking apart.

This I fear is much deeper than Iraqi oil. I am following the cash.
