**ELECTION RESULTS THREAD**
thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread now...Web-heads, see if you can find the local website links that update data as it comes in. We will probably need a few live threads to post and discuss the results.

8. all the more reason for you to vote
if they only flip one in ten votes, then you can beat them, if they flip higher, it will stick out so high statistically that they get caught and have to lie again and again.

Pretty soon, the lies colapse on them, and the Congress MUST impeach, or disolve.

9. Even if it is RIGGED -- cast your vote!
The more honest votes, the more difficult to rig.

Plus, it might not be true.

Even if there is a 0.0001% chance that it isn't true (and it's probably a bit higher than that) it would STILL be worth it to vote!

Vote!

12. Here is the referendum on the Maine ballot
Edited on Tue Nov-04-03 05:04 PM by Marianne
but I have no idea where to go to find out the results of today's vote. :-( I love voting in my little town--we vote in a village town hall that was built in the year 1800--and it is a great social event! I love meeting people there when we vote--and most are cheerful , smiling and full of mirth and good will. It is really neat. We still mark the ballot with an "x" in pencil and deposit it in a wooden box that is also an antique that has probably been around since 1800. The original benches are still there also, where people sit for town meetings.

The biggy here is the casino referendum

48. Looks like there will be no casino in Maine!!
YEAH!!!

AUGUSTA - Analysts say opponents of a $650 million gambling casino have won the battle.

With votes counted in 22 percent of 649 Maine precincts, the no votes had nearly a 2-1 edge, 67 percent to 33 percent.

Question 3 on the referendum ballot generated intense debate as the campaigns for and against the casino drew close to $10 million in contributions - a state record - to get their messages across to voters.

Question 3 Maine Tribal Gaming Act
140 of 649 precincts - 22 percent
Yes, 36,331 - 33 percent
x-No, 74,390 - 67 percent

13. Goodbye, machines
Today's vote was the last one in which we will be voting on the old fashioned machines. We are, I believe, the only city in our county using them, and they will be replaced by optical scan before the next election.

14. New Jersey
I know that few people care about the NJ legislative elections but control of the entire state legislature is up for grabs today.

This website will probably have election results tonight.

http://www.politicsnj.com/default3.htm

They are already predicting that Newark Mayor Sharpe James has won reelection to the state senate. (It is normal for NJ politicians to hold more than one political office) That isn't exactly a surprise though.

The biggest story is how many accusations of voter fraud will there be. Democrat turned Green Matt Ahearn says there are illegal poll workers for the democrats in his district. Very liberal democrat turned very liberal republican Arline Friscia says there is voter fraud on the part of Joe Vas in Perth Amboy. And there are reports of the absentee ballot problems in Passaic County where federal election monitors have been sent in by U.S. Attorney Chris Christie and all absentee ballots have been impounded by the Superior Court judge there. Oh yeah, the republicans in the 4th district are putting up signs in minority areas saying that Democrat Fred Madden is a racist.

Just another election day in New Jersey.

61. Peterson rocks...
the weekly political public radio show predicted he would win - but by under 60% - said any 60%+ win would be HUGE for any party. Mind you Peterson is the first Democrat elected as Mayor since the city and county governments were merged (Unigov) in 1970. According to the state website - with 99% reporting: Peterson (d) 87537; Jordon (r) 51185... Peterson with 63%!

At 11pm local radio predicted the democrats would take over the city county council for the first time since Unigov with 15 of 29 seats with one seat too close to call. It had been a 15/14 republican advantage. The thing is - many seats seemed to have turned over - and the races - due to absentee votes were growing closer and some that were declared may be back to undecided.

50. Electing mayor, controller, city council in Houston
Polls closed 2 hours ago. No live results in, just absentee/early voting.

Here is site to check: http://www.election.co.harris.tx.us/Html/results_for_20031104.htm

Moderate, white Democrat businessman Bill White who has spent something like $2 million of his own money is projected to lead, vs. African American state legislator Sylvester Turner and Republican Orlando Sanchez. Sanchez got serious backing from the Bushes two years ago when he ran, but lost. Sanchez' main asset, IMO, is he has pretty blue eyes. Bushes have been noticeably absent this round, until a last-minute endorsement yesterday. City elections have long been non-partisan, but in the past few years that is falling along the wayside.

Probably will be a run-off for mayor.

Same is true of controller, probably a run-off. Moderate Democrat and open lesbian Annise Parker, a three-term city councilmember, is running for the seat against two other councilmembers. With only the absentee/early votes in, she has a lead but not a majority.

Houston votes using electronics -- a dial system and a screen, no paper trail. Hart InterCivic machines. At least two precincts were (obviously) fouled up today. Something like 90? voters had to cast their ballots on sheets of paper torn in half given out by the judges, the voters scribbling their choices.

Hey, I've got an idea. Let's reverse it. Why don't we put the electronic voting machines in the Plan B room.

Bring out the paper ballots and the pens. If they fail to function for any reason (for example, ALL the pens in the building fail to write), use the electronic machines as backups. Whadya think?!

Hooray for Fairfax! The fundamentalist fruitcake has lost her bid for chair of the board of supervisors.

63. No book banning
in our immediate future at least. My mom is a teacher's aide and I heard enough about Brickner to put the fear of god in me. At least some good news tonight :)

56. Not going well in Mississippi?
27% Reporting - Barbour up 55%-44%.

A couple networks calling this one "too close to call". Does anyone know if our strongholds are still out? I heard Ranking county was still out and that one will go badly for us.

Any good news???

57. We elected the first woman, and the first Dem Mayor, in Lawrence, IN
Debbie Cantwell, a fireman, beat long time Lawrence Mayor and last year's Congressional candidate, Tom Schneider. Schneider was first elected Mayor in 1987.

Cantwell's victory was sweeter with the reelection of neighboring Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson. It appears that Democrats make take control of the city council for the first time since the days Richard Lugar was Mayor.

A good night for Hoosier Democrats!

59. Is Deborah Cantwell related to Maria Cantwell the Dem Senator from WA?
Because I'm pretty sure Maria Cantwell is an Indianapolis girl, and her father ran unsuccessfully for mayor as the Dem candidate a couple of times in the 80's. Just wondered if Deborah is like her sister?

Democrats took control of the Indianapolis City-County Council for the first time in around 30+ years tonight as well.

Democrats re-elected Mayor Bart Peterson to a second term as Indy Mayor.

A great night.

Mayor Peterson

60. Washington State
Election Results: http://vote.wa.gov/results/index.tpl

This is what I am worried sick about:

Initiative Measure 841
Ergonomics Regulations

Official Ballot Title:Initiative Measure No. 841 concerns the repeal and future limitation of ergonomics regulations. This measure would repeal existing state ergonomics regulations and would direct the department of labor and industries not to adopt new ergonomics regulations unless a uniform federal standard is required. Should this measure be enacted into law?

Right now it's passing by a small margin.
