Campaign 2003: Busy morning at Mississippi voting precincts

JACKSON (AP) - Mississippians took advantage of blue skies and hot contests Tuesday to vote in what election officials said was shaping up to be a very heavy election day turnout.

"In our county it seems like it's wonderful, lines everywhere," said Hinds County Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn. "I hope beyond all hope that when the day ends, we will have had a turnout like we haven't had in years."

Similar reports of strong turnouts were reported across the state as Mississippians decided races from governor - where incumbent Democrat Ronnie Musgrove hoped to fight off a stiff challenge from Republican Haley Barbour - down to decisions on district attorneys.

The busy voting day was not without problems.

David Blount of the secretary of state's office said several counties, including Madison, Copiah and Lafayette, reported problems with party representatives interfering with poll workers. (snip/...)

5. Well, it doesn't SOUND like Democrats
but you almost are afraid to assume something TOTALLY unforeseen hasn't happened. Rogue, criminally insane Democrats could resemble Republicans, couldn't they?

9. Counties
Madison County is the largest, wealthest, and most Republican county in the state. It is made up of rich suburns of Jackson. It would vote 80% GOP. Lafatteye County went for Bush in 2000 but split in 1999 between Musgrove D and Parker R for governor. I don't know about the third county.
