Schwarzenegger proposes dollar hike in minimum wage
Schwarzenegger proposes dollar hike in minimum wage
By TOM CHORNEAU, Associated Press Writer

Friday, December 30, 2005

(12-30) 13:44 PST SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to propose a $1 increase in the state's minimum wage after vetoing similar legislature this year, a further indication that he is cultivating a more moderate image as he begins his re-election year.

An aide to the governor said the proposal will be included in Schwarzenegger's State of the State speech on Thursday.

Under the plan, the hourly wage would rise from $6.75 to $7.25 in September and to $7.75 in July 2007.

Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill last September that would have provided the same wage increase but also mandated automatic hikes to keep pace with inflation. In his veto message, the governor said he believed it was time to raise the minimum wage but did not support the annual increase.

The new proposal does not include an automatic yearly increase.

1. It is a good compromise and Democrats should back it
I doubt he will get much Republican support for this though...

10. We'll be $7.50 on Sunday
We're indexed in Oregon. Did you guys get indexing? It kind of sucks in one way though, raises people get are wiped out by the indexing. When my kids worked min wage jobs, they felt like their time and experience wasn't being rewarded.

I didn't know you were in WA state. Where at?

14. That's good news
Maybe we should coordinate on a health plan for the future, so we could really lead on quality of life and economic competition.

I've never been further north than Castle Rock, where I lived back in 86. I've always planned to get up to your area, I know it's beautiful and I'd love to go to Seattle and the rainforest. *sigh* One of these days.

18. wow, I knew Maine was low at the $6.35
but there are way more states that are lower than mine. People here can't survive on the $6.35 how are others surviving on $5 or less? This is very disturbing.

15. Even $7.75 is woefully inadequate
in a state in which the cost of living is through the roof. $7.75 an hour for a 40 hour week works out to $310.00 a week before deductions. OK, slightly better than what we have now, but still nothing to celebrate.

17. Now that he's a lame duck he's pretending to be Populist
The legislature tried to increase minimum wage once before, and Ahnuld vetoed it.

But that was when he still had delusions of grandeur, before Californians rejected his right wing junta wholesale in the last special election.
