Second Storm Slated to Hit Northern California
Northern California residents braced for a second storm to hit the region Sunday, a day after the first sent rivers spilling into cities and mud sliding into homes and on highways.

One man died Saturday when a storm-weakened eucalyptus tree toppled onto him, a woman suffered a broken leg when a mudslide destroyed her Santa Rosa home, and more than half a dozen people were rescued from rushing waters.

The Russian River near the Sonoma County town of Guerneville was a concern overnight, with waters quickly rising. The river was expected to crest at 45 feet _ 13 feet above flood stage.

"We are just very strongly recommending that people living in the lower areas lock up everything and go to higher ground," said Linda Eubanks of Sonoma County's Office of Emergency Services.

1. Keep us posted, DU:ers in Calif.
We're here in Portland. I'm looking out the window, and the wind is starting to pick up. Our rivers have reached the flood stage.

3. This is sounding all too familiar. Please tell me FEMA is not in charge.
Hopefully someone with sense is running the relief efforts.

7. In Sacramento..
serious wind with huge gusts. Knocked out power to about 130,000 people. We lost power yesterday before 1pm and got it back around 7am. It was an adventure. My son and I had a couple of battery powered lanterns, we built a big fire in the fireplace and played Monopoly by the fire.

Several Eucalyptus trees blew over near my house, and everywhere you went limbs of trees were down.

It rained but the wind was the biggest problem. The rivers are actually down a bit from yesterday. Some flooding from seasonal creeks overflowing.

All in all, if you don't read the Sacramento Bee with all of it's fearmongering stories, thing as okay here.

10. raining steady and hard in Sacramento, but no wind at this time.
The good thing is no wind, the bad thing is the storm moves slowly when there is no wind. Very wet today in Sacramento.

13. In Sacramento as well. I think we need a melting snow pack as well as
heavy rains to generate floods of the 1986, 1995 and 1997 variety. Still, it is VERY wet here, with standing water in most parking lots and many street signs down and lights out.

8. still assessing damage in northern Humboldt co....
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 01:51 PM by mike_c
Still no power where I live, in Blue Lake (Monday AM-- I'm logging in from my office). I'm looking for dry ice to try and save the contents of my chest freezer. Lost power on Friday night. I spole with a PG&E rep who said it's unlikely the electricity will be restored during the next 24 hours. AARRGGHH!

Lots of trees down. Some flooding, but not much loss of property (except wind damage, of course). No one hurt as far as I know. Just lots of major inconvenience. Days without power. Roads closed. Landslides.
