U.S. Research Budget Worries Scientists
WASHINGTON - Defense and space projects account for most increases in the $135 billion federal research and development budget next year, worrying scientists who fear that after years of growth the nation is beginning to skimp on technology that fuels marketplace innovation.

The realignment by Congress of research money toward national defense and human space exploration means many universities, institutions and scientists will have to scramble for new sources of money or cut back current or planned projects.

The National Institutes of Health, the nation's premier biomedical research agency, saw its budget doubled between 1999 and 2003 but is getting $28.6 billion next year, a slight 0.1 percent drop that marks its first budget cutback since 1970.

The cut, while small, comes at a time when a lot of research simply costs more, even the laboratory mice used in cancer research, explained Dr. Harold Varmus, a former NIH director and Nobel Prize winner.

4. it's been going on for years (since 1990)
Poppy first dropped funding for basic research after 40 years of Cold War fueled federal spending on core technologies and disciplines. Which produced among other things the structure of the internet... Clinton solidified the change by requiring that research demonstrate its applicability in order to justify funding. Doober has so little imagination or understanding of science, and his advisors are so riddled with venality, that there should be no expectation of a change of course. American business is reputed to complain to its friends in the federal government that tax funding of nonprofit institutions creates unfair competition for the inefficient American business community (people who don't spend all their time bumbling around and contending with each others like overgrown puppies needing paper training manage to produce more insightful, higher-quality products ?) with the latter producing quick obliging responses, so you can rest assured that the situation will not change anytime soon.

5. Three words: Space Based Weapons.
More here: http://www.blah3.com/article1107.html

I remembered an article that showed up in the NYT last Spring about 'Space Superiority,' and it scared the crap out of me.

Welp, now we know where the money's coming from. Sacrificing improvement of life on Earth in order to be able to blow shit up from space.

6. watch for the cuts
in public health and safety. This will be outsourced to the corporations. We already have to turn to Asia and Europe for the state of the art information - truthwise.
