Iran says to resume nuclear fuel research-TV
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said it had informed the U.N.'s atomic watchdog in writing on Tuesday that it plans to resume nuclear fuel research in the coming days, state television reported.

The move, hinted at by Iranian officials in recent weeks, comes despite warnings from European officials that any work connected to uranium enrichment, including research, could imperil a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear issue.

1. Iran referral to Security Council more likely; vote scheduled for March 6
The news coincided with strong hints from Iran's Foreign Ministry that Tehran planned to reject a Russian compromise proposal aimed at defusing Iran's nuclear row with the West.

The two developments were likely to spark renewed calls in the West for the case to be referred to the U.N. Security Council, where Iran could face political or economic sanctions.

A referral vote could be held at the next meeting of the IEA's 35-nation governing board, scheduled for March 6. At its last session in November, the board opted to put off any vote to give time for Russia's proposal to bear fruit.

"The latest moves by Iran may strengthen the hands of those who want to report this matter to the Security Council at the March board," said a senior diplomat close to the IAEA, referring to the European Union and United States.

3. That is part of their plan, according to Scott Ritter:
I threw in a lot of other things that had to happen, like John Bolton had to become the head of mission and that we had to transfer the debate from Vienna to the Security Council. Today, we see Bolton in place. And we're looking at the United States working very hard to get the issue of Iran's nuclear program transferred from Vienna to the United Nations. And I guarantee you when it is transferred and when the Russians veto the American effort to put sanctions on Iran, John Bolton has already written his speech. He will stand up, and he will condemn the Security Council as an ineffective body that is unwilling to stand up and deal with genuine threats to the security of the United States of America, and the United States cannot afford to stand by and let this situation exist, and if the Security Council won't deal with Iran, then we will deal with it unilaterally. That speech has been written. I know the people that helped draft that speech. And he's ready to give it when it occurs.

4. US warns Iran against resuming nuclear research
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday warned Iran against following through on plans to resume atomic fuel research and development which it said would further Tehran's quest to build nuclear bombs.

"If Iran takes any further enrichment-related steps, the international community will have to consider additional measures to restrain Iran's nuclear ambitions," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

He added that the United States suspects the research and development work, which Iran suspended two years ago to defuse international pressure over its atomic ambitions, would further what Washington believes is Tehran's pursuit of a nuclear bomb.

6. US (Scotty) urges Iran to 'come clean', cooperate with nuclear inspectors
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Iran must abide by international agreements and "come clean" with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as well as giving its full cooperation to the UN agency's nuclear inspectors, the White House said.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan made the plea after the Vienna-based IAEA said earlier Tuesday it had received a letter from Tehran saying it would resume nuclear fuel research next week. (...)

"They (Iran's government) made some agreements, they need to abide by those agreements and act in a good-faith way in the negotiations," McClellan told reporters at the White House.

"They need to come clean and cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
