Bolivia's president-elect arrives in Venezuela today

COCHABAMBA, Bolivia (AP) - Bolivian president-elect Evo Morales will follow up his meeting with Cuba's Fidel Castro with a trip to Venezuela today to see leftist President Hugo Chavez, his spokesman said Sunday.

Though Morales started his international travels with visits to Castro and Chavez, the region's fiercest critics of Washington, this does not mean he was opposed to developing ties with the United States, said Morales' spokesman Alex Contreras.

Morales would have gone to Washington as well if he had been invited, Contreras said.

Officials in Washington have expressed concern about the growing relationship between Morales, Chavez and Castro - part of a Latin American tilt to the left.

1. Well, I figure whatever the DC blowhards are going to do about this,
it's about time they got started. Look for a new, improved
bullshit offensive this week. "Increasing" problems of some
sort: terrist networks, Evo is a dictater, Evo is a drug lord,
tension with Paraguay, something like that. Bolivia will become
a "threat" to the liberty of all Americans soon, and his
unexpected and unequivocal electoral mandate will be forgotten.

4. Thanks, Mika! We needed that. What a pity when our national policy
toward Latin America has to be approved by a small group of idiot right-wingers in Florida first?

Venezuelan Leader Says Nationalization of Oil, Gas on Agenda for Talks With Bolivia

The Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela Jan 3, 2006 — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said the nationalization of Bolivia's oil and natural gas resources would be a topic when he meets Tuesday with visiting Bolivian President-elect Evo Morales.

"Hydrocarbons and their nationalization we're going to talk about that," Chavez told reporters at Caracas' international airport, where a red carpet and full military honors greeted Morales.

Morales, who takes office Jan. 22, made nationalization a part of his successful presidential campaign.

He is being closely watched on how he manages Bolivia's vast natural gas resources the second-largest in South America after Venezuela. He has assured private companies operating there that he will respect their Bolivian assets but has also said the country's vast reserves have been "looted" and that current production contracts must be renegotiated.

CARACAS, Jan. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered a series of deals on energy and economic cooperation to visiting Bolivian president-elect Evo Morales on Tuesday, Venezuelan media reported.

Chavez agreed to supply Bolivia with 150,000 barrels of diesel fuel each month, worth 180 million U.S. dollars at current prices, in exchange for agricultural products.

He also agreed to give the Bolivian government 30 million dollars in aid when Morales officially takes office on Jan. 22.

"We can't lose a day in supporting Bolivia in any way we can," said Chavez at a joint press conference.

9. The Axis-of-Good.
Next thing you know Bolivians will be able to get decent medical care.
Then education, then who knows what? An indigenous American renaissance.
And it's all Bush's fault.
