Kennedy tries to get presidential reports

<snip>

Offered by Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., the provision would have unsealed a number of the president's secret daily intelligence reports.

Kennedy's maneuver came after President Bush and key administration officials ramped up their defense of the Iraq war, asserting that Congress saw "the same intelligence" as the White House before the 2003 invasion, which was rooted in the argument that Saddam Hussein possessed WMD.

"How they could all make such an obvious false claim is beyond belief," Kennedy said on the Senate floor. "It's bad enough that they distorted the intelligence on the need for the war. Now they're blatantly distorting the facts about how much access Congress had to the intelligence."

...

The provision was effectively killed by an unidentified senator, who put a hold on the intelligence bill, to be released only when Kennedy's provision and two others relating to secret overseas U.S. prisons are removed.

"It's a blatant cover-up," Kennedy chided.

3. I wonder if Congress knew about the 30 family members of Iraqis
that went and visited with Iraqi weapons scientists prior to the invasion. Every one of them came back and told them there were NO WMD!

13. Most interesting - this explains why the Times broke the spy story
They were going to be scooped by their own employee and look bad!

<snip>
The major revelation in the book has already been the subject of extensive reporting by Risen's newspaper: the National Security Agency's eavesdropping of Americans' conversations without obtaining warrants from a special court.
<more>

James Risen's book State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration may prove an interesting read.

4. This should have been the dem talking point 2 months ago
when Shrub and Cheney were yapping and making these false claims. All the Dems in Congress should have been in front of the cameras back then countering and challenging the president to share the "same information" he says they had, SPECIFICALLY the PDB's.

7. Oh why does Sen. Kennedy hate America so much?
Bush and Cheney said everyone had the same information, but now Kennedy wants them to prove it?! What has our wonderful country come to when the president and the vice-president can't just say anything that occurs to them and be believed? Why must everyone need to see "proof" or "evidence"? Can't they just accept what our leaders say and be done with it?

My goodness!

9. I suspect if he had said "lie"
they would have had the comment expunged and Ted would have to apologize.
Inappropriate for the Senate decorum blah blah blah.

:sigh:

16. "Unidentified Senator"; What the hell is that?
Quote:

relating to secret overseas U.S. prisons are removed."

Did the reporter simply not ask for that Senators name?
Or are the Repubs now allowed to block legislation anonymously?
