Swann to make announcement Wednesday
Swann to make announcement Wednesday

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A big day awaits Lynn Swann on Wednesday.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers star and veteran college football analyst for ABC Sports is expected to kick off his political career by declaring his candidacy for Pennsylvania's governorship.
Swann planned to open a three-day state tour at a rally in Pittsburgh.

Swann, a wide receiver for the Steelers, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

1. Someone took one too many hits to the helmet, methinks...
As a black man and a football fan, I'm embarassed. What an ass! I really don't think a former football player/sideline reporter who sounds like Elmer Fudd has much of a chance.

Lost to a Dem when he dropped out of congress to run for governor. He was told it was a LOCK, and he lost.

5. Go for it Lynn!
This will bode well for Rendell, that's for sure. I really don't think that the voters in Pennsylvania's "T" (the conservative, lily-white area between Pittsburgh and Philly) are going to vote for a black man of any party. Unfortunately racism is alive and well here in the hills. For better or for worse, it'll help Rendell.

Do the Repugs have anyone else lined up should Swann's polls tank?

31. PA has the next most KKK members next to Mississippi.
I remember hearing that from one of my friends, things won't bode well outside of Pittsburgh's conservative suburbs for Mr. Swann.

10. I think his biggest problem is going to be the Open Letter of Support for
scrub that a bunch of athletes, he was one of them, signed. That'll haunt him in cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (also he was a Steeler -- that'll haunt him in Philly too)

11. Being a Steelers fan...
I'm so ashamed.

Problem is, he'll get lots of votes here in Pittsburgh (usually a Democratic stronghold) just because everyone loves their Steelers heroes here, of which he is most certainly one.

PA is known as Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Alabama in between.

Swann could tip that red a little bit. Hopefully he'll blow it big time though.

14. Rendell's strength is in the Philadelphia suburbs
They overwhelmingly vote for him whereas most Democrats don't do anywhere near as strongly in Bucks, Montgomery, and Chester counties.

Little Ricky Santorum has poisoned the water in PA for Repugs.

If Swann had any political savvy, he'd decline this time around.

17. KamaAina to make announcement Wednesday
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TO ALL MEDIA:

Lynn Swann is a vapid goofball who can barely tell his mike from the goalposts and who was also highly overrated as a receiver. Stallworth did all the heavy lifting, and besides, Terry B. could've hit Billy Barty on those patterns, fer gossakes! We believe that Swann will make the perfect repuke poster boy for their upcoming annus horribilis and will be singing his political "Swann song" within a matter of months.

32. I remember reading about Charles Barkley
When he wanted to run for the U.S. House as a Repub, when asked by his mother, "Why a Republican? They're for the rich folk". Charles replied, "I am one".

Don't know if he still thinks like that though.

36. He doesn't.
I saw him on Bill Maher's show about a year ago and he explained his comments. Seems he didn't mean he was Republican, just that he could be if he wanted to because he was rich.

His views were way more liberal than I would have guessed when I heard him talk.

20. Lynn Swann to Run for Pa. Governor
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060105/ap_on_el_gu/swann_governor;_ylt=Ah5mAkP6RmvE0GQTjncoiWOs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OXIzMDMzBHNlYwM3MDM-

<snip>

PITTSBURGH - Former Steelers star Lynn Swann declared his candidacy for Pennsylvania governor Wednesday in the city where he made his name in professional football.

<snip>

Swann has so far revealed little about his political philosophy or the initiatives he would pursue as governor. He has advocated reducing certain business taxes and said he opposes abortion rights.

In independent polling, former Lt. Gov. William Scranton III and Swann are running ahead of the other two GOP candidates, but behind Rendell.

Swann said Wednesday that he hopes to convince blacks that he is a better candidate than Rendell, the former Philadelphia mayor. The Democratic Party has "taken the African American vote for granted," Swann said.

21. I LOVED Lynn when he was the WR for the Steelers!!!
I still dream of the Steeler dynasty! BUT, I don't want him as a Governor!!! He was a fantastic football player, but he's NOT a politician, and I suspect Rendell will prove that to him.

33. Same here!
He was one of my heroes as a kid....him & Jack Lambert!

So why hasn't he revealed his political philosophy, anyway? Is he ashamed of it, or doesn't he have one?

But, I won't vote for anyone who's not pro-choice, so he wouldn't get my vote if I still lived in PA.

Swann left the game due to several concussions. He still must be suffering from them.

He has as much chance as Lisa Guerrero.
