US warns Iran against resuming nuclear plans
The United States is warning Iran not to go ahead with plans to restart part of its nuclear program next week.
Iran has announced it will resume nuclear fuel research in defiance of US concerns that it is really on a quest to build nuclear weapons.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack is warning Iran not to restart the program, which was suspended two years ago. "If Iran takes any further enrichment-related steps, the international community will have to consider additional measures to constrain Iran's nuclear ambitions," he said. The US will not outline what those steps would be, although it concedes the issue could wind up in the United Nations Security Council.

"In terms of trying to draw a line around something being pure research, with respect to enrichment activities, is not something that we're going to buy, and I don't think the international community will either."
International opinion
Washington Institute for Near East Policy spokesman Patrick Clawson says European powers have made it clear in the past they would not tolerate Iran restarting nuclear research. They have been leading negotiations to curb Iran's programs in return for economic incentives, recently pushing for a compromise proposal, in which Iran would enrich uranium in Russia.

Mr Clawson says the US would rally other powers, such as Russia, to adopt its hardline stance against Iran in the case of a nuclear resumption. "It has been expected for months that this could be a real galvanising moment for the international community." The US has made curbing Iran's nuclear programs a top foreign policy goal, pressing for the country to be referred to the Security Council for possible sanctions for months.
