12 of 13 Trapped W.Va. Miners Found Alive
Jan 4, 2006

TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Twelve of the 13 miners trapped in an explosion in a coal mine were found alive late Tuesday after more than 41 hours underground, turning a community's worst fears to unbridled joy. Family members streamed from the church where they had kept vigil, shouting "Praise the Lord!"

Bells at the church rang out as family members ran out screaming in jubilation. Relatives yelled "They're alive!"

"They told us they have 12 alive," said Gov. Joe Manchin, leader of the nation's No. 2 coal-producing state. "We have some people that are going to need some medical attention."

At least one of the surviving miners was hospitalized early Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, which was on high alert and had called in all employees. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Turner said the man was listed in critical condition.

3. There is a lot of anger and rage right now.
I am watching CNN at the moment. A lot of hopes that were raised have just been crushed. I cannot blame them for being as angry as they are. Was it disinformation or just mistaken information? We will know eventually.

5. Wilbur Ross, corporate billionaire, owns this mess
W's big business concept. His flunky Mine Safety Bureaucrat pushed for less governmental regulation, and voluntary compliance to standards.

I am so sick of this blanking administration and everything it represents. They are evil, evil, evil.

6. Here's a little more from the Yahoo story
At least one of the surviving miners was hospitalized early Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, which was on high alert and had called in all employees. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Turner said the man was listed in critical condition.

The other miners' conditions were unknown, and several ambulances with flashing red lights were parked at the mine entrance.

Mine officials earlier found extremely dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in the part of the mine where the men where believed to have been. The odorless, colorless gas can be lethal at high doses. At lower levels, it can cause headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea, fatigue and brain damage.

The miners "are being moved to the surface, and their condition is being assessed while they are being moved," said Manchin spokesman Tom Hunter.

What the heck is going on?

10. OMG, Yahoo just changed the headline
Families Say 11 of 12 W.Va. Miners Dead

Hatfield told the families gathered at the Sago Baptist Church that "there had been a lack of communication, that what we were told was wrong and that only one survived," said John Groves, whose brother Jerry Groves was one of the trapped miners.

At that point, chaos broke out in the church and a fight started.

11. Only one US miner reported alive (BBC)
Only one US miner reported alive

Only one of the 12 trapped miners found in a US coal mine on Wednesday has survived, reports from the US say.
CNN said only one man - critically ill and rushed to hospital - had been found alive by rescuers, just hours after news all had been found safe.

CNN named the survivor as 26-year-old Randal McCloy.

Relatives had celebrated in churches after reports that the rescue attempts had found all 12 men alive in an air pocket in the mine.

"Everybody is stunned," said Sam Lands, the brother-in-law of Martin Bennet, who had been in the mine.

"I thought I was going to pass out. I couldn't believe it. We've been lied to all along. We need answers."

West Virginia Governer Joe Manchin had earlier praised news of the men's rescue from the Sago mine a "miracle".
