Gov. Pataki to Tout Tax Cuts in Address
Gov. George Pataki will use his final State of the State address Wednesday to push for tax cuts, create tax incentives to boost manufacturing and call for the use of renewable energy sources such as wind power.

.......

Pataki took office in 1995 and is not seeking a fourth, four-year term. He is considering a bid for the White House in 2008.

The governor was to call for a "pro-family tax cut" eliminating the so-called marriage penalty in filing state income tax and greater tax relief from local school taxes for seniors and families under the state STAR program. He wants to send taxpayers rebate checks, rather than allow school districts to erode the savings with more spending.

In addition, Pataki was to propose "empire zones" in every county by the end of the year to provide tax breaks for businesses that expand or locate there. He would also make renewable fuel tax-free statewide.

2. Does america know how poor school districts are
"He wants to send taxpayers rebate checks, rather than allow school districts to erode the savings with more spending."

He wants to erode education. We've certianly seen what happens, when that happens.

4. this is from our state lottery..........
for years it was supposed to be used for education and it is......the rebate is part of our Star Program to provide relief to taxpayers on their school tax bills. What the school districts do is estimate how much people are getting in tax savings and base their budget on it. They get the money which is just shown as a deduction from the tax bill. It more like having the fox in the hen house.

School taxes in NY State are totally off the hook, its not based on ability to pay but on whether you own real property or not. I pay almost $2000 in school taxes alone, retired, unmarried and have no children w/o Star it would be something around $28oo. Its ridiculous because schools here can't seem to live within a budget, it goes up 8-16% yearly. Take those taxes and add in county & local property taxes and it crazy. Some people here pay over 15k in combined taxes alone. There is a movement to try to take school tax and base it on income rather than property, which would be fairer.

3. Guess he didn't mention the surplus that we were not suppose to have
go figure it a slug fest each budget year between the assembly, senate & gov over the budget. Each one piles on the pork and they claim there is not enough in the budget. NY ened up with more than a 2 billion dollar surplus, some estimates place it closer to 4 billion, not bad for an allegedly broke state.
