Gingrich Says House, Facing Scandal, Needs New Majority Leader

Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives need to give up on former Majority Leader Tom DeLay and elect someone to succeed him as they try to overcome a wave of scandals, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said.

DeLay stepped down from his leadership post temporarily after being indicted in a campaign fund-raising abuse case in his home state of Texas. DeLay's ties to indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiring to corrupt public officials, may cause him further difficulties.

``You don't have to render any judgment on Congressman DeLay to conclude that over the next six or eight months, he is going to be very busy and that it's important for the House Republican Party to have an effective majority leader,'' Gingrich told reporters today after a speech to the Rotary Club in Washington. ``DeLay will have to defend himself. The House Republican Party has a different set of interests.''

Gingrich, who helped lead the Republican takeover of the House in 1994, called on his party to overhaul lobbying and campaign-finance rules. Both parties have created an environment that allows lobbyists like Abramoff to prosper, he said.

2. And some moderates will forget newt's past and look up to him again.
The usual message vs messenger stuff.

Indeed; the rethugs do not want to lose control - therefore they will find others to brush up against the people.

I also want to know when they will return to the Contract With America fluff...

Gingrich calls on Repukes to elect new majority leader...bu bye bugboy

And former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) called on House Republicans to elect a new majority leader to permanently replace Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), Abramoff's most powerful ally in Washington, who faces a trial on unrelated criminal charges of violating Texas campaign laws.

"Unequivocally, the House Republicans need to select a new majority leader in late January or early February," said Gingrich, who cited revelations in The Washington Post that a public advocacy group organized by DeLay associates had been largely financed by Russian energy interests.

8. If We Are Lucky, The GOP Will Ignore Newt
If they don't elect a new leader, they will be toast. But this bunch of stiff-necked, arrogant, lords of all they survey might just be stupid enough to give DeLay enough rope to hang the whole party.

Then a great winnowing would remove the chaff (crooks) from the wheat (honest public servants, if such creatures still exist), and we would see our nation rise again.
