Name-calling row erupts at UN

New York - A general debate at the United Nations turned into a name-calling row when a representative of North Korea referred to the Japanese as "Japs."

UN general assembly president Julian Hunte pleaded with speakers to mind their language after deputy UN ambassador Kim Chang Guk let the epithet fly in a discussion on Tuesday of the annual report of the UN's nuclear watchdog agency.

The ambassador said he rejected pressure from the "Japs" over Pyongyang's nuclear programme.

He said he used the term because a Japanese diplomat the day before had referred to his country as North Korea rather than its official title, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

At least our Dear Leader knows how to call names. He called Kim Jong Il a "pygmie". This is far more impressive than jsut an abbreviation sort of name calling.

Then he went world class on us and name-called the populace of three ENTIRE nations as EVIL!!

Finally the world has something to look to Jr as an example and they blow it.

This was all in response to the North Koreans being offended at not being called by their rightful name - The Democratic People Republic of Korea. This has always been their official name, so people should keep in mind that reffering to them simply as North Korean's is probably as offensive to them as as Pakistaini being called a Paki or probably more appropriately calling a scotsman a north englander.

15. I disagree

Their official name is quite a mouthfull - it is only natural that people would shorten it in conversation. They accept the Korea part (unlike the Scots accepting being part of England), so what is so bad about the "North" part? It is geographically accurate. I think they are taking offense too easily. Certainly retaliating by using a term like "japs", which everyone knows is derogotory, is way over the top.
