You gotta love these devout "Christians." Honest and truthful and upright, ain't they?
They make me sick.

Locals unaware of signing anti-gay marriage petition

By Marisa Donelan
Sentinel & Enterprise

<snip>

LEOMINSTER -- When Karen Aveyard signed a petition last fall, she had no idea it involved the status of gay marriage in Massachusetts. Aveyard said the person who asked her to sign said nothing about the proposed amendment. "I think it was in front of a grocery store," the Leominster resident said. "I was asked to sign something else, I didn't know it had anything to do with marriage."

Workers from Vote on Marriage, a ballot question committee formed to promote an amendment defining marriage as the union between a man and a woman, collected signatures from all over the state from Sept. 21 to Nov. 23, spokesman Kris Mineau said Tuesday.

The signature collector asked her to sign a petition regarding an amendment to allow grocery stores to sell wine, Aveyard said. She was surprised to learn her name turned up on the Vote on Marriage list.

"I don't remember the exact conversation," she said. "I don't think grabbing someone while their arms are full of groceries is a good way to get support for something, because they're probably in a hurry. It bothers me because that does not reflect my opinion at all."

1. They say the marriage thing is a values issue, yet lie their asses off
in order to get their way.

Go figure.

2. Not to defend the slimebags; BUT
you should always read something carefully before you sign it.

3. Of course
but that does not mitigate deliberately and fraudulently telling someone they are signing one thing when they are really signing something else.

5. No it doesn't...
The fundies were guilty of lying.
Those who signed without reading were guilty of stupidity or at the least gullibility. We cannot trust these people. They'll stoop to any and all depths.

7. Not unlike Nader's people in NH last year.
They did the old bait and switch with their petitions to get on the ballot in NH last year. I heard that story several time when I was phone banking there for Kerry, how people had been tricked into signing the petitions for Nader. One lady even contacted the AG to file a complaint.

4. I remember being asked that question myself this summer
in front of a grocery store. My job takes me to many stores all over the state. Since it was summer, my 13 year old was traveling with me that day. She remembers the guy too.
We were coming out of the store and he stopped me to ask me to sign a petition to allow the store to sell wine. I refused to sign it. Didn't even look at the paperwork that he had, wish I had looked at it. I thought it was strange because the store I was leaving was two doors down from a full service liquor store! He said that the petition was for THAT STORE ONLY. I told him that I wasn't from that area so my signature would hold no weight locally. He insisted that it wouldn't matter that I wasn't from that town. I insisted that it mattered to me, since I didn't feel that I should have a say in such a trivial matter that wouldn't effect me, but would effect those that lived in the area and that it should be their choice. I then pointed out that there was a liquor store two doors away and wondered aloud what the issue was really all about. I remember walking away thinking that he must have been a distributor looking to open up a new market for his products.

It's not unusual for some grocery stores to have a wine and beer department, but they are usually the larger stores, which this one was not.

Damn it. Wish I had examined those papers now!

You can see if you signed. The Know Thy Neighbor web site (linked in
at least one reply below) has an online list of *EVERYONE* who signed
the anti-gay petition. If you're on the list and don't believe you
intended to sign the petition, I think KTN would like to hear from
you as they were investigating backing legal action.

17. I KNOW I didn't sign it
I believe I stated that in my previous post. I meant, I wish I had looked at the papers he had and chatted a bit more with him while I examined the petitions. I would have probably caused a scene right there if I had looked at them more closely after being asked to sign something for wine sales instead.

I am absolutely sure that I didn't sign it. I would never have signed it without reading it.

6. This was Vote on Marriage's response to the complaints:
"If anyone is putting their signature to a piece of paper, it is incumbant upon them to know what they are signing," he (Mineau) said.

So first Mineau misleads people about the content of the petition. Then when the signees later complain they were misled, Mineau blames the signees for not knowing what it was they were signing.

What a maddening, unctious, crooked individual.

8. Wasn't this guy involved in the voters registration frauds
from last year too? I seem to remember reading an article that the church was embrassed because they hired this smuck without knowing his tactics.

12. Interesting link here I think
<snip>

Osceola said the Seminoles tried to strike deals with the late Gov. Lawton Chiles and now Gov. Jeb Bush in which they would donate some of the proceeds from slot machines to the state. Their next recourse was to negotiate a compact with the federal government, which Osceola said was unlikely to succeed.

"We all know who's the governor and who's the president," he said.

But the passage of the amendment has its advantages for the tribe. Any form of gambling approved in the state also becomes available to the Seminole casinos, Osceola said.

If Broward or Miami-Dade voters approve slots for their counties, the Seminoles also could start using them.

</snip>

This is Arno Political Consultants. They are the group that gathered the signatures in Mass and in other places. They gathered signatures for this ballot question in Florida. All the players are there, including Theresa LePore.

They have also done work for Blackwell in Ohio.

Someone with a better working knowledge of the other current scandals needs to check out this article and see if it fits.

13. They might be ebbarssed by their schmuck, but-
It is obvious from the fact that this woman was questioned that they decided not to throw out the signatures that this schmuck fraudulently obtained.

Working to get the 9 Commandments posted everywhere.

15. Here's how they get your sig on a petition...
Someone asks you to sign a petition and shows you the top page (usually on a clip board) with the resolution language.

Only the first page (of many underneath) has the actual text, which you might or might not read past the title.

Subsequent pages (forms) don't always have the petition title and/or resolution language on them at all.

So, if you read or glance at the top page and agree to fill in the form (on another page entirely), petition people can
easily switch your form page to another petition collection, and you'd never know.

I refuse to sign any petition that doesn't have the resolution language on each form page.
