Reid says Chertoff should resign

Senator echoes sheriff after city falls off list

By MIKE KALIL
REVIEW-JOURNAL

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called for the resignation of Homeland Security Department Secretary Michael Chertoff on Wednesday, one day after the government dropped Las Vegas from a list of cities considered potential high-risk targets eligible for special anti-terrorism grants.

Reid, D-Nev., joins Clark County Sheriff Bill Young in calling for Chertoff to step down as a result of the decision jeopardizing millions in additional federal funding that Nevada currently receives as a result of being considered a potential terrorist target.

"Anyone who can't see that Las Vegas is a high-risk area doesn't deserve to serve in a position like that," Reid said. "We had more visitors on New Year's Eve than they had in Times Square and we're not a high-risk area? For heaven's sakes."

Las Vegas and 10 other cities previously categorized as "high threat" fell behind 35 areas declared eligible this year for special grants earmarked by the Department of Homeland Security.

(note: wonder who the other Bush opponents, er, uh...cities are?)

Las Vegas is considered a city of sin and western excess (a perfect target for religious fundamentalist nutjobs), and yet, it's NOT high threat. Chertoff is certifiably deranged and dangerously incompetent or WORSE, purposefully, willfully and maliciously negligent.

3. Perhaps Reid should have considered THIS beforehand...
January 12, 2005 - Venice, FL

Michael Chertoff, appointed by President Bush to head the Homeland Security Department, may have shielded from criminal prosecution a former client suspected by law enforcement of having funneled millions of dollars directly to Osama Bin Laden while in charge of the U.S. Government’s 9.11 investigation.

Republicans love it. Hookers, gambling, booze, coke, strip clubs. However, their base, the god-almighty Christian conservatives, hope it gets blown up in the name of Revelations. That way Fallwell can blame the hookers and queers.

Of course, Ralph Reed can help a felon extort money from Indian tribes by using God and Robertson/Fallwell style nutjobs remain silent...Maybe Im off topic, but Im sure you understand what I am getting at.

5. Well, we can tell this isn't a political decision, no way, impossible!
It is just mere coincidence it is the state of the Democratic Minority Leader of the Senate that has been keeping the heat on the bush cabal, just a coincidence I am SURE.

6. Vegas is a very blue, democratic city
highly unionized.

Few republicans would be threatened by a terrorist attack, therefore less DHS money.

These are the people who made the crack about San Francisco, remember?

9. Vegas residents are blue. Not the visitors, those white high rollers.
But I guess it doesn't matter who gets killed in the eyes of the bush administration as long as the target city is Democratic. The important thing, for bush, is to send a message to the terrorists that Las Vegas is vulnerable because Harry Reid ruffled his chickenhawk feathers.

Chertoff is aiding the enemy by failing to protect Las Vegas.

10. LV Still listed in FY06?
It looks like Las Vegas is listed in the Fiscal Year 2006 eligibility. Is this a reduction in the amounts or is it some other program?

15. Those docs refer to "eligible" areas. Evidently the cut was made Tuesday.

18. This is sick. They are denying funds to Las Vegas in order to punish...
Harry Reid. This has nothing to do with whether or not Las Vegas is a high-risk target, because anyone with a brain knows it is a high-risk target.

Chertoff (who I'm sure is following orders from Bush/Cheney) is risking the lives of everyone in that state for pure political revenge.

I hope Harry fights back hard...and I hope against hope that this story gets major media coverage.

20. They should dissolve the whole Homeland Security
monster while they are at it. Isn't there already Department of Defence? Why create another agency while destroying the constitutional rights of americans?

As I am foreigner and possibly wrong on this, Homeland Security seems more like directed agains ordinary americans rather than "terrorists".
