EU plans for GM organic food condemned

(Filed: 05/01/2006)

Food campaigners are angry at EU plans to allow organic food to contain genetically modified content.

Soil Association wants 0.1pc limit on GM content

The European Commission's proposals would permit products accidentally contaminated with up to 0.9 per cent GM organisms to be officially certified as organic.

The Commission said the regulation aimed to take a realistic approach to the risk of GM contamination and ensure organic farmers were not penalised.

But the Soil Association rejected the idea, saying organic food should have a maximum GM content of 0.1 per cent.

Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director, said: "Our position is no GM in Soil Association-certified organic, which in practice means the lowest level of GM that can be reliably and consistently detected, which is 0.1 per cent."

Friends of the Earth (FoE) said they believed the EU plans to be legally wrong, adding that current regulations did not allow organic products to contain GM substances "in any quantity".

1. Who cares about organic
food if it's gm? It wipes out the purity of organic food..don't mess with genetics.

That's my policy, too.."no gm in soil association".

2. Exactly.
We're planning to export US food to Europe. All the market information says that "Europeans are dead-set against GM food". Don't even THINK about offering GM food to them. It's clearly stated in the requirements for exporting.

I for one agree with this. I REFUSE to ship GM crap to other countries. FrankenFood = No Deal.

3. we already ship tons of GM crap to other countries
not to mention forcing it on iraqi farmers and at one point a texas biotech company (the name escapes me) tried to patent an indian strain of basmati rice. we have no shame whem it comes to the agro/chem-corporations and their drive to harvest the almighty dollar. even though, time after time nature has shown we shouldn't try to defeat her but cooperate, we still have these people in the boardrooms and the labaratories thinking they can outsmart an entire ecosystem instead of trying to learn how to operate and thrive within it's boundaries.

4. This is a serious dilemma

because if you are growing organic crops but surrounded by GM farms, you can't control the contamination.

So you can't sell your product and you're fucked.

On the other hand, organic consumers deserve to have confidence that their food is GM free.

Solution?

BAN GMOs!!!!!!!
