Durbin says Alito should be questioned about domestic spying

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. U-S Senator Dick Durbin says Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito (uh-LEE'-toh) needs to be questioned about domestic spying during the upcoming Senate confirmation hearings.

The Illinois Democrat says domestic spying is -- quote -- "a significant constitutional issue." Durbin also says the role of the president and the course of the war will be key questions.

President Bush has recently been criticized for authorizing the National Security Agency to monitor telephone calls and e-mails involving U-S citizens as part of his response to the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Durbin is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is scheduled to hold confirmation hearings next week.
