Doctors: Damage to Sharon's brain likely irreversible,

Doctors: Damage to Sharon's brain likely irreversible, likely to remain sedated for at least 72 hours

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has probably suffered irreversible brain damage that would preclude his ever resuming office, Sharon's doctors acknowledged Thursday night.

The official statement released Thursday by Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem in Jerusalem, where he is being treated, said merely that Sharon was in serious but stable condition after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage on Wednesday due to the rupture of an artery wall. That statement, issued by Hadassah director Professor Shlomo Mor-Yosef, said that Sharon is under sedation, on a respirator and paralyzed; that he is likely to remain under sedation for up to 72 hours; and that it is impossible to know what his condition really is until he emerges from sedation.

Mor-Yosef added that predictions for the future are almost impossible to make. "We can't know what the results of the surgery will be, whether it will have influenced his motor skills or his ability to think. Only after he comes out of the induced coma will we be able to make an assessment."
Unofficially, however, Sharon's doctors echoed the assessment given to Haaretz earlier by other senior doctors who had not personally examined the premier, but were relying on media reports of his condition. These doctors told Haaretz that the prime minister appeared to have suffered extensive and irreversible brain damage.

Depending on the amount of blood he hemorrhaged and where exactly in his brain the hemorrhage occurred, this damage could range from impaired physical and mental functioning to spending the rest of his life in a permanent vegetative state - if he survives at all, the senior doctors said. But based on the information publicly available, the chances that he will survive appear to be low, they added.

15. Just came from a dinner with some doctors
they said for all purposes Sharon is already brain dead. Once they turn off that respirator, that is it. His killing spree is over. Couldn't help laughing at the posters in the Palestinian areas. They spoke volumes.

Sharon risked a great deal in recent years, planning and executing the withdrawal from Gaza and rupturing the Likud party to create a centrist party, Kadima, which was and hopefully still is, the best hope for a Palestinian state.

Beyond that, your insensitivity during these hours is both awe-inspiring and depressing. A little respect for those who don't share your ideas, and who are grieving and deeply concerned about the future, would be deeply appreciated.

3. I'm not fond of Sharon but I'm sorry this happened because
BettenYahoo will take his place and he's far worse than Sharon. I don't think we are going to see peace in the holy land. The Neocons must be dancing on the streets.

8. you are probably right. I wish sharon could take his policies with him.
I think we in the US can make that happen by ending financial support for the occupation.

23. Sure. As long as we also end the financial support for the
oil rich Arab states, the Egyptians, the Palestinians, and all the other folks in the Middle East to whom we give billions, an alarming amount of which go to buy weapons instead of being spent on development and reform.

10. I'm not so sure
The people of Israel are also getting fed up with being jerked around by their neo-Cons, and Netanyahu's negatives are just as high as his positives. I think that's why Sharon formed a new party -- he saw that Likud was being turned into a vehicle for Israeli Straussians, and his populist side re-asserted itself. Too late, though.

With all the conflict over there, what has it gained? It's allowed Iran to become a major player, and put al-Qaeda in the driver's seat. The Palestinian Intifadeh can't be too happy about playing second-banana to yet another self-interested group of power players. With their main ringmaster, Arafat, out of the picture, there's no one to restrain the palace intrigue.

It will be the same in Israel. The Old Guard is just about gone now, and the highest-profile of the Young Dudes is Netanyahu. The Israeli rank-and-file may well find themselves in common cause with the Palestinian peasantry.

Cui bono? Iran, Benjamin Natanyahu and the Israeli Neo-Cons, and a rogues' gallery of behind-the-scene players with more cash than ethics.

Of course, I could be wrong. But this time, I think it would be in the details rather than the big view.

Agreed? Disputed? Enraged?

Haaretz analysts: Political scenarios in a post-Sharon era

By Haaretz Staff

Yossi Verter: Nothing is certain anymore. Everything that seemed to be true until yesterday has taken a major hit. If, before Wednesday, Ariel Sharon and his Kadima party had been seen as the great victors of the elections, Thursday marked the return of the election race.

Kadima will probably remain intact and its members won't return to their former parties, but its public support and power have been severely damaged. How severely? The polls that come out Thursday night and Friday will give an initial indication, albeit incomplete, as they will have been be conducted while everyone is in a state of shock and sorrow at Sharon's condition.

The country's major political entities are facing three tasks: Kadima will have to prove it is not a one-man party; Labor chief Amir Peretz will have to reassert the relevance of his party, maybe by welcoming back a few of its lost sons; Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu will do the same. In any event, an age of utter uncertainty, almost unprecedented, began in Israeli politics on Thursday.

Aluf Benn: The big winners in the political arena after the deterioration in Sharon's health are the Likud top two, Benjamin Netanyahu and Silvan Shalom. Netanyahu returns to the starting line of the elections race as a candidate with a good chance of becoming prime minister once again, despite the fact that he had been dismissed as the leader of a marginal right-wing party.

Shalom, who managed to persuade the party's ministers not to quit the government, will remain in the Foreign Ministry and keep Likud's most senior political position.
