Greens leader Senator Bob Brown says he is outraged at a Japanese claim that US naval intelligence is using satellites to spy on the anti-whaling activities of Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd in the Southern Ocean. Senator Brown says the Japanese requested the US surveillance because it was concerned the harassment of its whaling fleet amounted to piracy.
He says the claim is in the latest bulletin issued by the Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research (JICR), the group conducting the whaling. "I know the American people would be appalled to know that the US Government's naval facilities have been dragooned into the service of the Japanese whale killers against Greenpeace. How extraordinary is that?" he said.
Senator Brown says he is writing to the US Government to clarify the situation.
