Cincinnati Reds' Stenson shot, dragged to death in Arizona
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson was shot then dragged to his death behind a pick-up truck early Wednesday morning, Chandler police confirmed to the East Valley Tribune.

Stenson, who played in 37 games for the Reds this season, was in Arizona where he played with the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League.

His body was found in the street near Dobson Road and Chandler Blvd., said Chandler police Sgt. Mark Franzen.

Used to play for the Red Sox. Should've stayed up here.

2. This is unutterably horrible........can we assume that this is racial?
Is it too early to make that assumption?

A terrible death - nobody deserves to go like that. Only a sub-human could inflict something like this on someone.

I am sickened.

3. This is why I have problems with being 100% against the death penalty
I know the arguments against the death penalty, and I tend to agree with them ... and then something like this happens. The death penalty for these killers would be downright humane, compared with their crime.

10. Hey! Don't knock yourselves......
Not only is the US one of the few supposedly "civilised, First World" countries that retains the death penalty and even uses it on the mentally ill and juvenile criminals....

You ALSO have a hugely disproportionately high number of prisoners compared to population!

Woo! Way to go!

life without can parole accomplish all of society's goals other than retribution, i.e. vengence. And I'm not so sure that life without parole isn't a fate worse than death.

In any case, keeping even the worst and most heinous convicts alive and in the appropriate correctional facility could afford social scientists the opportunity to study their behaviors, their backgrounds and whatever changes may occur over time. It seems to me that a better understanding of why certain individuals commit such horrible crimes- especially in this country- would go a long way toward recognizing patterns and providing markers for more effective and earlier intervention.

20. My problem with the death penalty is . . .
. . . do you really trust the government to make these decisions? Especially the respective State governments. B* is a former governor, our current governor is Taft. Do you trust them to administer this type of penalty?

Deserve ain't got nothing to do with it.

26. Just have to make sure that the CORRECT killers are brought to...
...justice. Those 65+ individuals that have been freed from death row in various states because of DNA testing are prime examples. Makes you think that quite a few people have been executed when they've actually been innocent.

39. The death penalty for these killers would be downright humane,
That sentence kind of makes me curious about your main premise. Either you are against the death penalty or not but to say this crime makes you rethink your position and suddenly favor the death penalty but that in this case it would be too humane. Life imprisonment is not a light punishment. IMHO life behind bars would be far more horrible than death. We all must die, but to cage someone for the rest of their natural life is an incredibly horrible ordeal.

I don't have one. I'm just incredibly pissed off.

Life in prison without the possibility of parole would be the best punishment, I agree.

43. Where in that story does it say he was dragged to death?
It says he was shot and run over. Not dragged to death. No way to know if he was dead before he was run over. No way to know if he was shot and then fell into the path of the vehicle either.

It's no consolation for the poor man, but let's not turn it into a Jasper TX thing just yet.

It's a shame, Stenson may have been able to star with the Reds. He showed some flashes at the end of last season. All the guy wanted to do was better his skills in the off season and now some peace of trash kills him. Very sad.

24. The cat sig is a slam at Frist..who routinely tortured cats
when he was a med student.. If you are new, you may not have heard about that.. he would go to shelters and "adopt" cats as pets, and would then "experiment " on them..

He's the senate majority leader now.. what a guy :(

www.google.com the tupe in Frist+cat, and you will be amazed

45. Thank you for your insightful psychological advice.
However you can keep it to yourself. I suppose if I didn't own two cats you might have a shred of a case, but you're SOL on this one.

Now, ~this~ was a cruel sig picture, I can switch back to it, if you like. Stop pretending that you know me or the way I think, and stop spamming the LBN boards with your unwarranted activism.

46. I've never mentioned this before
but I also find that picture quite disturbing and repulsive and wondered why you would use it. The print under the picture is almost impossible to see, so it takes some effort to read it. And even though I do know it is Frist-related, when I see that picture I don't think about Frist's cruelty as much as I think about the cat's fate.

48. Thank you FlaGranny--

printing that picture at all--is "promoting". That's what all
advertising is about--the message--and the subliminal message.
In this case the subliminal message is that the picture is funny.
The poster thinks it's funny--and the fact that he owns cats is
not a better defense than Frist gave --that his "experiments"
benefitted humanity.

29. Don't mean to rain on the parade, BUT...
Can someone explain to me how the headline could read:

Reds' Stenson shot, dragged to death in Arizona

When the article says:

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson was found dead early Wednesday on a residential street after he was shot and apparently run over in a Phoenix suburb, police said.

The only other mention of the state of his body is this:

Stenson's body was found after police received a call around 1:45 a.m. that shots had been fired. It appeared he had been run over by a vehicle, police said.

In other words, NOWHERE in the article does it mention that he was dragged. In fact the description sounds more like a carjacking to me.
