Bush Says U.S. Economy Strong, Urges Tax Cuts Be Made Permanent

Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush said the U.S. economy is being propelled by tax cuts that should be made permanent this year.

``Cutting taxes helps people find a job,'' Bush said in a speech to the Economic Club of Chicago. ``The American economy heads into 2006 with a full head of steam. The American consumer is confident.''

The administration is taking credit for a strong economy and a jobless rate of 4.9 percent. Democrats assert Bush is out of touch with middle-class Americans who are struggling with higher prices for medicine, college tuition and home heating costs.

``Bush has his eye on the big picture, claiming credit for the economy,'' said Merle Black, a political scientist at Emory University in Atlanta. ``This is Ronald Reagan politics: Cut taxes, get the economy back.''

Bush trumpets economy's strength
Economic team to fan out across the country

Friday, January 6, 2006; Posted: 2:32 p.m. EST (19:32 GMT)

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- President Bush shrugged off a report showing weaker-than-expected job growth on Friday and declared that "the American economy heads into 2006 with a full head of steam."

Bush rattled off a string of recent government reports suggesting a growing U.S. economy, and he used his speech to the Chicago Economic Club to prod Congress to extend his administration's tax cuts that are due to expire.

"In 2005, the American economy turned in a performance that is the envy of the industrialized world," Bush said.

Bush, who also visited the Chicago Board of Trade, spoke as he and leaders of his economic team fanned out to trumpet recent improvements in the economy despite Friday's mixed jobs report showing a slowdown in monthly hiring.

20. Stupid Bush is making a classic mistake.
I just read in a book about economic trends that "presidents don't control the economy". Regardless of how much they would like to take credit for a good economy, it's caused by other factors.

The worst part is, when they falsely take credit for an improving economy, the public blames them for when the economy goes badly.

Which it will start doing in February. And the book says when that happens, watch out. The public throws them out and gets a new leader.

Stupid clown Bush doesn't realize this.

Just don't let him speak anymore.

What wasn't mentioned was the massive 2003 job recatagorization that catagorized fast food workers under the "manufacturing workers" catagory.

What a complete F***nut.

26. In 2000, we needed permanent tax cuts because of budget "surpluses"
In 2002, we needed permanent tax cuts because of a recession.

In 2004, we needed permanent tax cuts because of a stagnant economy.

In 2006, we need permanent tax cuts because of a strong economy.

I wish shrub would just cut to the chase, drop the whole "justification" and "rationale" schtick, say he likes tax cuts because they help republicans win elections, and be done with it.

28. My take
The economy can't be too good or we would be paying off the debt. That is what is done when one gets ahead a little. Get rid of deficit spending and pay it off. The darn war is really tapping us dry. The rich folks are free riders and only use the lower classes all the more.
:argh:
The greed continues to grow unchecked.

If this country ever does fall into some sort of anarchy, then I hope there's a Mme DeFarge out there doing some knitting and including ALL of the executives in the media corporations who have been co-conspirators in this whole travesty.

They'd be the very first people I'd put on the cart...
