'In God We Trust' license plate gets initial nod in Indiana
Indiana has license plates dedicated to everything from Girl Scouts to the Indianapolis Colts, but some legislators want to add one more -- for God.

For the second straight year, Rep. Woody Burton, R-Greenwood, is pushing for creating an "In God We Trust" license plate. The House passed the bill in last year's session, but it stalled in the Senate.

"What I want is exactly what it says on the dollar bill," Burton said. "Nothing more."

.......

Burton said he wasn't sure exactly how much the God license plate would cost but said it would be different from many specialty license tags because no money would be passed on to a special interest group.

That doesn't satisfy Lindsey Mintz. As director of government affairs for the Jewish Community Relations Council, she testified against the license plate at Thursday's committee hearing.

"There is still a line between religion and government, and it is actually being crossed," Mintz said. "There are still tax dollars being used to create a plate that invokes a particular deity."

Because if they are constitutional, why cant Christians put thier slogans on everything?

7. I live in Indiana
Indiana is one of the Reddest states in the Union outside of the south. Six of its nine House seats are GOP, the only 2 Democratic seats are in Indianapolis and Gary. If you are Democrat you almost always have ot be a DINO such as Evan Bayh.

I has voted GOP in every Presidential election since LBJ. Presidential Candidates never spend anytime here. There is no reason too it always go GOP. It is one of the very first sates to report GOP because of the overwhelming percentage.

I live in the southern part of the state where most have ties to the south.

IN the north you have large farms.

Indiana was once run by the KKK in the 1920's

I know we have some progressive here but we are drowned out by the GUNS GOD GAYS crowd.

17. Thanks for the Welcome..
It is very hard to be a reasonable person in a sea of unreasonable and ill informed and easily misled people. Unfortunately I have family members who have been poisoned by Fox News but I never talk politics with them.

It is not fun going to polls in Indiana knowing the futility of your vote especially for the President.

Indiana has lost huge for decades under GOP rule yet time and time again like much of the rest of the country it continues to vote against tis own self interest. Indiana has much more heartache in store, when Delphi decimates Kokomo and Anderson when the eliminate 1000's of jobs.

One prime example is our esteemed Governor Mitch Daniels who was vote din with a landslide on his first day in office remove union representation for state workers.

Yet I know many state workers voted for him because of GUNS GOD and GAYS.

PS I love Guinness

33. Instead of presidential candidates writing Indiana off
maybe they should spend a little time here.
Indiana is red for a reason and it's not because we're stupid. It may have a lot to do with we don't get attention from the candidates.

8. We have an 'in god we trust'
license plate here in SC. We also have this:

If Indiana gets their 'god' plate, insist on one like this...or even replace reason with 'reality' or 'science' or some other word guaranteed to drive the fundies nuts. They tried to block the plate here but the courts said that if they allow one specialty group a plate, they have to allow opposing viewpoints to also have one.

pm me and I can give you Herb Silverman's email address. (He's the atheist that had to fight 7 years through the courts in order to become a notary public here in SC...and he's the guiding light behind this plate.)

When did that happen? I follow the news - it had to have been very slight to no coverage for me to have missed it - unless the story dates back six or seven years.

16. It's just a generic "God" reference
And so I'm not going to go ballistic over this. Now, if they were pushing for "Jesus Saves" plates...

The fact is, "In God We Trust" is on all our cash, and is all over the place. I'm going to pick my battles. I've never lived in Indiana anyway.

However, being a South Carolina resident, I'm damn glad this state issues "In Reason We Trust" plates, if only because they're a thumb in the eyes of all the Christo-nazis here.

26. I'm not sure that's true
Because if it is, then I have unconstitutional money in my pocket.

I don't like the commingling of state and religion either. I'm just noting what courts have already said about "In God We Trust", and picking my fights.

35. That is why it MUST be removed from the pledge and our money, too!
It doesn't belong on any of it!

What's next after this one - put god on all official business because "it's on the money and in the pledge" krap, too?!

That's like saying "I'm god and this is true because the book I wrote says so!" krap.

24. Gad! Indiana and Ohio and even Colorada are slip, slipping
away. And believe me I know the feeling. Kentucky used to be mainly democratic(big and little) "d." Now we are red and it falls directly on the lazy Dem Party leaders. They did nothing for Gore, which really galled me. They are picking up the pressure this year. We had a 600,000 dollar rally with Hilary as the speaker.

We happy 'godless' atheists and assorted nontheists must shut up, or we're 'costing votes'.

I'll tell you motherfuckers (you know who you are) what's costing votes: not standing up for the separation of church and state, civil rights and equality for all. That's costing you MY fucking vote, for example.
