City Council passes resolution demanding impeachment of Bush & Cheney
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 10:41 PM by stop the bleeding
I hope that this is not a dupe, I felt that this was a good article to post since they had good sound reasoning.

I am starting to hear the drums beat...

Arcata calls for impeachment

....Councilman Dave Meserve and Councilwoman Harmony Groves penned the resolution that passed 3-2 Wednesday, joined by Councilman Paul Pitino, with Mayor Michael Machi and Councilman Mark Wheetley dissenting.

”All elected officials swear to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” Meserve said. “This obligates us to act when the president violates the Constitution. We hope that other cities will join us in demanding the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.”

White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said Bush understands that there are people who “oppose the president's efforts to win the war on terror.”

<snip>

The resolution also asks that Congressman Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, join with others in Congress to introduce articles of impeachment against Bush. That would make him the third president to face the proceeding.

The first was President Andrew Johnson and the second -- more than 100 years later -- was President Bill Clinton. Both were acquitted. President Richard Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment.

1. You never know.
This may not seem like much on its own, but small acts of bravery like this one can take root in other places.

As a side-note, I find myself rather driven to puke by the response of the White House spokesman. "He understands there are people who oppose the present's efforts to win the war on terror" is just another way of saying "they're bad, bad people who want the villains to win!"

14. Arcata, California... I lived there for a time back in 1999.
Great area. I'm considering going back because of these resolutions. Sounds like my kind of place.

4. let's not forget that Arcata has also passed an ordinance against...
Edited on Fri Jan-06-06 10:47 PM by mike_c
...the USA PATRIOT Act (including a fine for any city official who cooperates with a PA request!), has condemned the war against Iraq, and is a nuclear free zone. It's also not very big bidness friendly. In short, my kinda town. I've said before-- I KNOW there are some republicans here, but I don't believe that I personally know any. THAT'S a great place to live!

on edit-- I actually live in Blue Lake, a couple of miles inland from Arcata, but I work in Arcata, and the whole area is pretty damned liberal. The Arcata City Counsel is dominated by Green party members.

11. I think that article is incorrect
To my knowledge, Clinton was indeed impeached, just not removed from office.

13. Clinton was indeed acquitted. Being impeached isn't the full process
that's just part of the process....it's a 2 part process.

The House impeaches. The Senate acquits/convicts. Those 2 separate actions are not one and the same.
You can be impeached(by the House) and acquitted (by the Senate) or impeached(by the House) and convicted (by the Senate). Clinton was impeached and acquitted.

It's in the Constitution, btw.

Think "indicted" when you hear "impeached" - then it goes to trial - to the Senate in this case - to determine conviction or acquittal.

Rah, RAH, RAAAAH, and zip boom bah. I am so proud of this small beautiful city! If they can take on the power of Washington, any city can do the same!Every one should get this into their local media!
Lets try for your town and my town and your home town and then a few state governors.

18. Arcata is already on the RW shit-list!
This won't change existing animosities. I lived in Arcata from 1978-1980. (Trinidad (Westhaven)'80 - '81!) Humboldt County got screwed by big bidness logging. The Redwood forests were raped and local citizens left hanging by out-of-state mega corporations. What little economy remains is mostly 'home-grown'(if you get my drift!) It is a lovely little corner of America and I'm proud to have spent part of my life there. One of the ironies of the town is the statue of robber-baron/empire-builder McKinley in the town square.

More power to Arcata! (For the geographically challenged: NOT ARCADIA!)
