Wis. Governor Vetoes Abortion-Pain Bill
Wis. Governor Vetoes Abortion-Pain Bill

Saturday January 7, 2006 6:02 AM

By TODD RICHMOND

Associated Press Writer

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Jim Doyle on Friday vetoed a bill that would have forced doctors
to tell women seeking abortions after their fifth month of pregnancy that their fetuses could
suffer pain.

Doyle, a Democrat, said there is no evidence conclusively proving when a fetus can feel pain.
The Republican-controlled Legislature should not be allowed to decide scientific fact, he said.

"It would be reckless to inject a requirement that doctors communicate unproven science to their
patients during an already difficult and sometimes traumatic time," Doyle wrote in his veto message.
"This bill intrudes on the doctor-patient relationship ... and contravenes the requirement that
doctors provide objective and accurate information to their patients."

When a fetus can feel pain is a matter of debate in the medical community.

4. "Women seeking abortions in Wisconsin...
...already must be given information on alternatives to ending their pregnancies. They also must wait 24 hours after a counseling session to have the procedure performed."

the proverbial slippery slope in action. i see no reason why both 'requirements' couldn't be struck down by a court.

8. I don't have a problem with info on alternatives
I've had abortions (2) when I was in my 20's. In the state I was in at the time (N.Dakota), you had to go through the counseling on alternatives maybe an hour or two before the procedure. Nothing was forced on me, they just let me know how to learn more about alternatives if I wanted to know.

There was no pressure for any particular choice, just statement of facts, who to contact for alternatives or other help, and it was just kind of made known that you were free to leave any time before the abortion and didn't owe any money or explanation. Counseling on possible complications, the length of the procedure, the amount of pain, how it is performed, etc. I filled out a questionnaire on whether or not a parent, the father, or someone else was forcing you to have the abortion, were you being abused, were you conflicted about the abortion and wanted more counseling or wanted counseling afterwards, that you didn't have to tell your regular doctor, etc. About how the sudden change in hormones after the pregnancy is terminated may cause depression and how long that may last.

IMO, it was basic info that you should receive for any surgery. Interestingly, I was also informed of the possible complications with taking the pregnancy to term and giving birth and how they outweighed the possible complications with an abortion. Some could misconstrue that as pushing abortion. I would rather go through that short counseling session than hear women say "I didn't know the alternatives". As long as nothing is pressured, simply presented, I don't think there is a problem.

For the lurking freak republic members/Loosey-Ann pondscum, I'll again point out the hypocrisy of the nazi party, which claims they'll get govt. out of people's lives.

7. Women seeking abortions after their FIFTH month of pregnancy???

Most women are not seeking abortion then. If they are that far, something has gone seriously wrong. These people just make me sick!
