A cop dies & kin
blame 9/11 debris

By ROBERT F. MOORE
DAILY NEWS POLICE BUREAU

Retired NYPD detective James Zadroga - who leaves behind a young daughter, Tylerann - wrote a letter about his work at Ground Zero.
A retired NYPD detective, who worked more than 450 hours at Ground Zero, died Thursday from brain and respiratory complications that his family insists were linked to the World Trade Center cleanup.

While autopsy results are pending, union officials maintain James Zadroga's death is the first post-9/11 death of a city officer linked to hazardous material from Ground Zero.

"Our detective is a hero," said Mike Palladino, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association. "He had a disregard for his own health and life and tried to save others."

In a chilling letter Zadroga wrote about a year after the terror attacks, he described his deteriorating health - including a constant cough and sore throat.

"No one cares at the job," he wrote. "They tell me I'm fine, go back to work. But, truthfully, I haven't felt this bad in my life.... And what thanks do I get now that I'm sick?"

2. To me, the proposed medical diagnosis makes sense.
You have NO idea what was swirling in the air in the varieties of pulverization at Ground Zero, Tribecca, and the surrounding areas. Just the destruction of hundreds of thousands of personal computers with their toxic mercury, plastics, etc. was bad enough. Add in the smoke from the fires, the dust from the buildings. Etc. Etc. Etc. And then you are down there for 450 hours (18.75 days) breathing in that stuff without any true protection for your lungs. This goes beyond workers comp. This guy died on 9-11 with the rest of them.

3. Not to worry the EPA and BushCO said it was perfectly safe,
just like New Orleans is safe now too. :sarcasm:

This is so sad, and sickening.

19. Many firefighters and police officers

were given a compensation by the Victim's Compensation Fund, the same fund that figured out the value of the deceaseds lives' and awarded the families compensation. The hitch - they had to sign off on filing a lawsuit.

Fortunately, the spouses/families did not sign a waiver for a lawsuit, so perhaps the wives can still sue. Unfortunately, it does not sound like this police officer was able to receive compensation by the fund.

5. He won't be the last.
There was such an official cover-up of the extremely toxic character of the "WTC Dust".

Why? Because they were also covering-up what really happened to the WTC on 9/11?

They lived out their life expectancies.

6. Read this: Hillary Clinton 03
Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 02:44 PM by BenDavid
The following says it all. I watched her speech on the Senate floor soon after the EPA report came out and her later accusing former epa head christi todd whitman of altering the report as this column so suggests. She, Clinton has tried often to get this brought before the Senate, but you know how those repugs are when it comes to holding hearings and investigations...NONE>>>NOTHING>>>>hopefully if this is the case with this young man's death, then Clinton, Shumer, and all the House Dems from New York will call again for these investigations.......I do thank you

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called Tuesday for Senate hearings on a recently released Environmental Protection Agency inspector general's report that says the agency prematurely asserted that the air was safe to breathe after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Clinton, a New York Democrat, said the report, released Friday by the EPA"s inspector general, shows the agency was under White House pressure to assure the public, even though it wasn't clear what potential toxins might be in the air.

"I don't think any of us ever expected to find out ... that our government would knowingly deceive us about something as sacred as the air we breathe, outdoors and indoors," she said in a speech on the steps of City Hall.

"They knew and they didn't tell us the truth, and the White House told them not to tell us the truth," Clinton said, adding that she wants to find out who was responsible for pressuring the EPA.

New York's World Trade Center towers collapsed September 11 in a cascade of cement, glass and metal after being hit by hijacked jetliners, killing about 2,800 people and sending a dark, billowing cloud over the metropolitan area.

"On Friday, through a report released by the inspector general of the EPA, we learned that the EPA chose to reassure the public about the safety of the air outside the perimeter of Ground Zero without the data and evidence to justify those assurances and despite contrary evidence -- as well as personal experience, for those of us who were down there breathing it, feeling it, seeing it -- that there were deadly contaminants in the debris," Clinton said.

Bush to New Yorkers: Drop Dead
04-Sep-03
September 11 Cleanup
Harvey Wasserman writes, "George W. Bush has officially told the people of New York City that as far as he's concerned, they can drop dead.
The White House directly interfered with planned EPA warnings about the toxic fallout from the World Trade Center explosions. It had 'competing considerations' that came before protecting the health of the people of New York. Among them were re-opening the stock exchange as quickly as possible, and limiting clean-up costs and liability claims. Because of Bush's lies, thousands of Americans will suffer cancers, emphysema, heart attack, stroke, birth defects, stillbirths, sterility, eye/ear/nose/throat disease and much more... The short-term deaths of three thousand people will be dwarfed over the long term by the lethal fallout."

"Former Environmental Protection Agency administrator Christine Todd Whitman denied that she was told to lie about concerns over health risks at ground zero in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Whitman has recently been under scrutiny from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Rep. Jerrold Nadler for allowing the EPA statements to be filtered through the White House and screened by the Council on Environmental Quality.

8. Union: Cop Died From Ground Zero Air
"Although James is the first, unfortunately I do not think he is going to be the last." (We can thank the chimp's EPA liars for this.......)
(AP) A retired, 34-year-old city police officer who spent hundreds of hours searching for Sept. 11 victims at ground zero has died of respiratory disease that union officials believe is related to the cleanup.

15. So what was Rudy's responsibility in this?
I know of city fire fighter who was assigned to cleanup and died a year ago of the same thing.

This is just one more thing to pile on to these Republicans who wouldn't protect us.

16. It was horrifying to watch swarms of workers without masks at Ground Zero
9-11 was when I started watching CNN, and like the rest of the nation I kept tuning in day after day to see what was taking place there.

It horrified me to watch all those people digging through the rubble without face masks of any sort, and from 3,000 miles away I worried about the millions of people downwind of the WTC, and I didn't even have any idea of just how many toxins had been released.

After the news about Christie Todd Whitman's being pressured to suppress the bad news Jimmy Breslin wrote a scathing column. In it he mentioned that he, along with everyone else he knew in New York City, never drew a good lungful after 9-11, never ever felt healthy again.
