of his downfall. He will proclaim his innocence to the end. Bye Bye BugBoy:applause:
Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish

I bet the editorial board at the Houston Chronicle are  right about now, after all they were endorsing his "I want a speedy trial" line.
The link I had for this editorial has expired, but it was written on 12-20-05

186. How true
although his mom is still among the living. Apparently they have a strained relationship.

Oh, BugBoy didn't have a problem suing when it served his purpose. Leader DeLay's family decided to end his father's life after a crippling accident (and then sued a manufacturer for big money):eyes:

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/TheNote/story?id=619234

From another post:

They did sue the companies involved in making the parts of the tram, while ignoring it was family members that actually designed and built it. Raises the question of who was really responsible for the faulty engineering and safety.

In addition, at the least, it's hypocritical:

"The DeLay case moved slowly through the Texas judicial system, accumulating more than 500 pages of motions, affidavits and disclosures over nearly three years. Among the affidavits was one filed by the congressman, but family members said he had little direct involvement in the lawsuit, leaving that to his brother Randall, an attorney.

The case was resolved in 1993 with payment of an undisclosed sum, said to be about $250,000, according to sources familiar with the out-of-court settlement.

Three years later, DeLay cosponsored a bill specifically designed to override state laws on product liability such as the one cited in his family's lawsuit. The legislation provided sweeping exemptions for product sellers."

In other words, after his family won damages by suing the part manufacturers due to "pain and suffering", he turned around and attempted to make it impossible to do so.

And then there's this:

"Rep. DeLay, who since has taken a leading role promoting tort reform, wants to rein in trial lawyers to protect American businesses from what he calls "frivolous, parasitic lawsuits" that raise insurance premiums and "kill jobs."

144. Don't hate ALL republicans -- they vote for democrats too
I assure you that lots of republicans are happy with this too and I don't think it's helpful to the democrats to portray all republicans as DeLay/Abramoff lovers, or of the DeLay/Abramoff unethical breed. With his control-freak, "You're with us or you're with the terrorists" management style, Tom DeLay has forced a lot of moderate republicans, who share a lot values with the democrats, into voting like the right wing fringes of the party.

This doesn't mean that the democrats shouldn't be pleased with this turn of events. It's just time for democrats to take over power the old-fashion-American way .. .. by actually getting Americans to believe in their values and vote for them!

172. Fair post
It's just more than a little frustrating when you never hear anything but blanket denial of the obvious from across the aisle. It shouldn't take a criminal conviction to realize that The Hammer and criminals like him have no moral grounding. Power and money are all they are after--they do not serve even a small fraction of their constituents. Why didn't we see an acknowledgement of this on Free Press? This week was the first time I'd seen an objection on that website to what the Republicans are involved in. Does it take THAT much exposure to get a Repub to see such obvious corruption of power? What does that say about those (ehem) "Democrat-voting" Righties?

It's a RW hold-up. Their politics are their ski masks and taxpayers' coffers are their bank vaults.

185. I believe that Republicans who are not religious radicals who believe
in and repeat Robertson-Rush type lies on behalf of the regime and who are not active participants in the operation of bringing this country down are hurting. I believe they expected a Republican agenda different from what they were delivered. I kind of feel sorry for them. They probably believed in small government and fiscal controls and the separation of church and state as nearly all of us did. I feel sorry for them, but, they are now OBLIGATED to do something just as we are trying to do something. IMO - they can start with doing something about the theft and privatization of our vote because they are not going to be able to get their replacement candidate any more than we can get a Democrat. The fact that Replubicans and Democrats don't do more about the vote is an afront and an abuse of the Constitution.

246. Two Petitions and can look up Reps in your state who took Delay's dirty
money with pull down menu of states.

"Demand that Congress support the aggressive, groundbreaking, meaningful reform of the ethics and lobbying practices in Washington as proposed by Democrats Rahm Emanuel, Marty Meehan, and Russ Feingold. Called "tough and long-overdue" by the New York Times, "just what is needed," by Norman Ornstein, and "heartening" by Common Cause, this legislation would end the infamous "K Street Project" initiated by Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff, and would immediately initiate hearings in Congress to hold the corrupt accountable.

States with Members of Congress that took DeLay's Dirty Money:
http://www.dccc.org/hos_get_involved/armpac/default

Tell House Republicans to Return DeLay’s Dirty Money

We, the undersigned demand that House Republicans return Tom DeLay’s tainted money. DeLay’s dirty money was earned through the systematic betrayal of the American people. It is the result of a pay-for-play agenda where hard-earned tax dollars are funneled to Republican supporters like the oil and gas industries. The least House Republicans can do is run their 2006 campaigns without continuing to capitalize on the culture of corruption DeLay has cultivated. The first step towards defeating DeLay is dismantling the money machine that has kept him afloat; to isolate him from the rubberstamps he's funneled his tainted money to for so long.

http://www.dccc.org/houseofscandal/howscandalsaffectyou.html

Thank you for signing our petition today and joining us in taking the first step in our fight to dismantle the system of corruption. Together we will send the message that Americans demand we change the culture of corruption that Tom DeLay has come to represent. Together, we can do better. It is time for a change. It’s time for a new set of priorities.

The American people deserve better than this culture of corruption. There are real problems that need solutions and today with your signature we are taking a step further to bring that change in leadership to Washington."

194. Explanation
To explain my previous post, my point is twofold. First, there are plenty of republicans right now that the democrats can focus evidential and demonstrable attacks against (DeLay, Frist, Libby, Abramoff,Rove, just to name a few), and two, that this still does not solve the democrats identity crisis. You can yell and scream about republicans all you like, but this isn't getting any democrats elected (just ask Howard Dean).

If democrats keep hating all republicans, then they will divide the American people further every republican who voted for Bush will vote for the republicans again, and we will be right where we started. Attacks on the republican people, like Howard Dean's recent statement, make the party appear out of touch with the majority of Americans. The party that will be stronger after all this incompetent conservative nonsense will be the party that can include more of America, not less of America.

Thanks to those who welcomed me! I've been watching from the deck for awhile and finally decided to jump in the water.

p.s. Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled about DeLay (and I happen to be a big fan of Kerry and Obama and plenty of democrats). I just feel the vitriolic sentiment toward all republicans is hurting the Democratic Party.

247. I agree Shepson - we should welcome Republicans who have seen what bush
and the very dirty Republican POLITICIANS are - I think the honest Republicans left in Congress after the honest Republicans were purged have been threatened by the Bush Crime Family and their connection to The Hidden Hand. Theresa Kerry's first husband was a Republican who died in a plane crash as was well reported during the election but the fact that John Towers died in a separate commercial airliner crash the same week was not. I read that bush, senior was paranoid about their involvement with bush in major drug trafficking and bush, senior was afraid they were going to talk, and with his CIA connections, they could have been bugged.

There are only 100 Senators, what are the odds that 2 would die IN THE SAME week from commercial planes? And why didn't the media mention this along during the Presidential "campaign". I voted for Kerry but when he took his dive tried to find out what was going on and someone said to look up Skull and Bones and I found the answer to why Kerry conceded before the votes were counted and disappeared for 3 months and told Massachusetts Congresspersons not to vote to refuse to accept the Electors voting for bush on January 6 while Kerry disappeared to monitor Middle East elections instead of his own. Barbara Boxer was the only Senator courageous enough to join the House of Representatives in refusing to accept the Electors votes because of the massive election fraud detailed on the Green Party Site and by Congressman Conyers.

We need everyone who is appalled by the crimes of this Regime to fight against it and should welcome their participation. I now think Kerry would have been taking orders from the same people bush is -- see Kerry's coverup of Iran Contra evidence and his removal from the Chairmanship because of it and his destroying evidence of POWs left in Vietnam because bush senior wanted to use the money for drug smuggling. Kerry is not only Skull and Bones, he is a Bilderberger.

237. yup.. let's just kill everyone who disagrees with us
they are filthy scum and deserve to die. You would do more good for the party my friend if you switched sides and spewed your hatred toward us, then the independents could read your posts and decide not to vote for the party you like just to piss you off.

Not every Republican is a bad person just like not every Democrat is a saint (present company included of course) Both parties have good people and bad... hate the policies but not the people. It's just like Auntie Pinko said months ago... we all know Republicans and for the most part they are good people. Not every republican agrees with the spokespeople for the party, and most certainly all the ones I know think Pat Robertson needs to "grab a coke and a smile and STFU" to quote a recently departed genius.

Besides who would be next on your hit list my friend? After you dispose of the republicans shall you target the Dems that are to the right of your beliefs?

anyone still calling themselves a Republican in this day and age is either deluded or has a major character flaw.

Selfishness used to be a art of the platform. Now they're downright dangerous. If you don't want to be painted with the same brush, don't vote Republican.

There is only one way to change what's going on in this country right now, and that is for there to be such a monumental shift to the left that the country can begin recovering from the right-wing policies that are destroying it. Cases in point: our educational system and our environment.

the honest way but it couldn't overcome the corruption and dirty tricks of the Republican party.

I'm not too worried about the American people believing in the values of the Democratic party. It's always been there and it always will be. But the Republicans have always raised more money and had powerful people in high places to assure them a win. The SCOTUS, Republican congress, Florida legislature, Cruella DeVille (Katherine Harris), Jebbie Bush and voter fraud fixed the first election for King George and Diebold BBV in Ohio fixed it for Bush in 2004.

21. More added to the MSNBC story:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10704050/

WASHINGTON - Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay decided Saturday to give up his post as House majority leader, clearing the way for new leadership elections among House Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal, two officials said.

These officials said DeLay, R-Texas, was preparing a letter informing fellow House Republicans of his decision. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt the formal announcement.

DeLay is battling campaign finance charges in Texas and was forced to step aside temporarily as majority leader last fall after he was charged in his home state. He has consistently maintained his innocence and said he intended to resume his leadership post once cleared.

His about-face came amid growing pressure from fellow Republicans who were concerned about their own political futures in the wake of this week’s guilty pleas by lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Missouri Rep. Roy Blunt, the party whip who temporarily has filled in for DeLay, was expected to run for majority leader.

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, talks with a member of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership Dec. 20, 2005 in Houston.

61. yes, i heard how he has tried to paint a rosy pic--"the majority' supports

him. te he.

.......But a spokesman for Mr. DeLay, a very determined politician who has never shied from a fight, suggested that he would resist any effort to oust him permanently. "Mr. DeLay appreciates the fact that a majority of his colleagues recognize that he remains committed to resuming and fulfilling his responsibilities as majority leader as soon as he is exonerated in Texas, which he believes will happen by the end of the month," said Kevin Madden, the DeLay spokesman.

118. Well, Blunt has been doing the work, since Bugboy "stepped back"
Remember how they wanted David Drier to have the temp job, but then, the "he won't talk about his sex life but everyone "knows" and he lives with his senior staffer, Brad--the best paid staffer on the Hill" issue came back up? Blunt was the fallback guy, and they sorta split the duties, but Blunt got top billing, as it were. So no doubt Blunt feels that he is wearing the crown, and he likes the fit....

Seriously...lock step can be a frightening thing in politics.

I don't know much about Blount, but if he's not a "hammer", he's got to be more reasonable than Delay. And when Republicans start thinking through the issues, they might come down on the right side occasionally.

12. Hmm..I wonder how much mileage we'll get out of this...
It seems like a pretty big victory--right-wingers have been defending him tooth and nail for months. They've got a lot riding on DeLay riding this thing out. But then again, whoever they get will be more palatable publicly. But then again, also less capable of keeping House repubs in line during the run-up to sinking ship midterm election.

Anyway, this is great news!

218. Vince Foster was found in the park.
...The body was found in "unusual surroundings" on a steep slope in dense brush. (What is a usual surrounding for a suicide in a park?)...

I don't know much about this source, but I found it quickly with Google.

252. "Usual Surrounding" to the unimaginative would probably be park bench.
Unusual would be when you have a favorite hidey hole amongst the brush and bushy trees - such as somewhere you might want to sit and think in total privacy - or have had a tryst out of sight, and you do something to yourself there.

When I lived in Seattle during my Jr HS and HS time, I spent a lot of time in the parks (most parks there were more or less natural environment parkland with trails) near home. There were a few hidey places in thickets along slopes or even ravine sides in some of the more wooded park areas where I could bring a drink (soda or juice), sit, and think - and not have to worry about the dog walkers, joggers, and bike riders interrupting me. And I know I wasn't the only one. I'd often have to move on to the next "favorite spot" or pick up after someone who had been there before me. There were even a few suicides and/or natural deaths in thickets like those when I was growing up.

Just a comment as to that general situation.

Haele

DeLay Letter

Saturday, January 07, 2006

U.S. Representative Tom DeLay Letter

to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Tom DeLay (R-Texas) sent the following letter to Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert, explaining his decision to permanently step down as majority leader:

Dear Mr. Speaker,

I am writing to inform you of my decision to permanently step aside as majority leader, and of my belief that the best interests of the conference would be served by the election of a new leader as soon as possible.

The job of majority leader and the mandate of the Republican majority are too important to be hamstrung, even for a few months, by personal distractions.......

Sincerely,

81. Houston Chronicle: DeLay to quit top House post

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3572030.html

Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay decided today to give up his post as House majority leader, clearing the way for new leadership elections among House Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal, two officials said.

These officials said DeLay, R-Sugar Land, was preparing a letter informing fellow House Republicans of his decision. These officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt the formal announcement.

His about-face came amid growing pressure from fellow Republicans who were concerned about their own political futures in the wake of this week's guilty pleas by lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

DeLay acted hours after a small vanguard of Republicans circulated a petition calling for leadership elections and citing DeLay's legal problems as well as his long ties to Abramoff.

85. I'm sure he's
saying that privately to his supporters. This is just for appearances sake, to make it appear like he has the best interests of the House in mind. I am convinced, that in his mind, this is just a temporary setback. He has no intention of permanently going away. He enjoys the power way too much to ever voluntarily give it up permanently.

Devastating poll numbers for Tom DeLay
12/06/2005

Fresh off of his Monday night fundraiser with Vice President Dick Cheney, Tom DeLay woke up this morning to some poll numbers that probably made him want to stay in bed.

This new poll affirms what we've known all along: Tom DeLay is in big trouble -- not just with the House ethics committee and the legal system, but with his constituents in TX-22 as well.

Here's what a USA Today/Gallup poll of 803 adults in Tom DeLay's own district discovered:

If Tom DeLay runs for re-election in 2006, in general, are you more likely to vote for the Republican candidate Tom DeLay or for the Democratic Party's candidate for Congress?

* Tom DeLay -- 36%
* The Democrat -- 49%

I think it should be DU's 2006 project to help support this candidate. Anybody with me?

and check out what a gerrimandered congressional district looks like.

102. Just In: Text of Letter From Rep. Tom DeLay to fellow Repubs
Dear Colleague:

Today, I have asked Speaker Hastert to convene our conference for the purpose of electing a new majority leader, the position I have been honored to fill these past three years through the trust and confidence of our colleagues.

During my time in Congress, I have always acted in an ethical manner within the rules of our body and the laws of our land. I am fully confident time will bear this out.

However, we live in serious times and the United States House of Representatives must be focused on the job of protecting our nation and meeting the daily challenges facing the American people. History has proven that when House Republicans are united and focused, success follows.

While we wage these important battles, I cannot allow our adversaries to divide and distract our attention. I will continue to stand up for the issues I care so deeply about and work with you all on these priorities. I am constantly thankful for the support of my constituents in recent days as well as over the years they have allowed me to serve them. I will continue to work every day to fulfill their trust, and yours.

Regards,

Tom DeLay

Bush calls DeLay innocent, stands by Cheney and Rove

Jim VandeHei, Washington Post

Thursday, December 15, 2005

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/12/15/MNGADG8BMT1.DTL

Washington -- President Bush said Wednesday that he is confident that former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is innocent of money-laundering charges, and he offered strong support for several top Republicans who have been battered by investigations or by rumors of fading clout inside the White House.

In an interview with Fox News, Bush said he hopes DeLay, a fellow Texas Republican, will be cleared of charges that he illegally steered corporate money into campaigns for the Texas Legislature and will reclaim his powerful leadership position in Congress.

"I hope that he will, 'cause I like him, and plus, when he's over there, we get our votes through the House," Bush told Fox News' Brit Hume. DeLay was forced to step down as majority leader after he was indicted in the fundraising case, and he is seeking a quick trial in hopes of returning to power early next year.

Bush has refused to speak about the CIA leak investigation or the impending trial of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the former vice presidential chief of staff who was indicted in the case. But he said he believes that DeLay is not guilty -- weeks before his trial is expected to begin. It is highly unusual for a president to express an opinion about a pending legal case.

120. Lots of optimism here... is it misplaced?
Just because DeLay is out means nothing. You can be sure that Hastert or whoever replaces him will be equally insidious. All these minor victories against the corrupt neocon power structure have not in fact dimmed their power one iota. Just look at Bush's recess appointments, the stolen election machine, the Supreme and lower court picks, the war, and on and on. The neocon war machine continues its goose step unabated.

So I'm a bit reluctant to get excited here. The corrupt neocon regime has more heads than a hydra.

Click here to ask Barbara Boxer to lead the fight for fair elections!

Of course, the heart of the neocon power comes from their takeover of the US election system. As we speak, neocon secretaries of state are rolling out rigged Diebold voting machines throughout the US to comply with the "Help (Steal) America('s) Vote Act." Senator Boxer was the only one with the stones to speak out against the seating of the Ohio electors in the stolen '04 election. Sign the petition urging her to champion this issue. Because without a fair vote, we have no democracy and no way of ever overthrowing Rove's "permanent Republican majority." It's now or never, Dems!

Not at all...I'm beating my drum
There are a lot of congress members riding on DeLay's coattails that are feeling the heat right now. It's all about the midterm election; we have a real possibility to turn the house. Your concerns about the election systems are not misplaced but we need to continue the fight on all fronts while we address them. We can multitask.

Welcome to DU, and understand a lot of us have a battle cry that drives us - "NEVER GIVE UP" (NGU)

155. All this talk about 'scandal'
"Scandal" is a very weak word to describe what these guys, including Delay, have been up to.

The way I see it, the path is from the mob, murder of former business owner that was strong armed into selling his casino, to Abramoff and Delay to provide legislative cover for money laundered and skimmed from the casino to pay-off the republicans.

Thats why Delay had power to get things done, he was the conduit from all sorts of illegal activities from organized crime to politicians to keep them in line.

Delay belongs in jail as an accessory to murder.

Thats what I think.

Scandal is way to weak of a word, but the media as always is trying to cover for these crooks.

208. Tom DeLay Steps Down As House Leader
WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom DeLay, the defiant face of a conservative revolution in Congress, stepped down as House majority leader on Saturday under pressure from Republicans staggered by an election-year corruption scandal.
"During my time in Congress, I have always acted in an ethical manner within the rules of our body and the laws of our land," the Texas lawmaker told fellow Republicans in a letter informing them of his decision.

Still, referring to criminal charges he faces in his home state, he added, "I cannot allow our adversaries to divide and distract our attention."

DeLay temporarily gave up his leadership post after he was charged, but always insisted he would reclaim his duties after clearing his name.

His turnabout cleared the way for leadership elections among Republicans buffeted by poor polls and by lobbyist Jack Abramoff's confessions of guilt on corruption charges in connection with congressional wining and dining.

When the 'rules' and the 'laws of the land' are continualy being 're-interpreted' by Bush et al, it's hard for a sleezy elected official to know what's what these days ...

"The culture of corruption is so pervasive in the Republican conference that a single person stepping down is not nearly enough to clean up the Republican Congress," said Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democratic leader.

Added Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, chairman of the House Democratic campaign organization: "With the permanence of their special interest philosophy, a change in the Republican cast of characters simply doesn't matter."

"Culture of corruption." That's the phrase. Let's make it the mantra.

When Bugman lit up a cigar at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in DC a few years ago, he was asked to put it out. The employee who asked him to do so cited federal law (the steak house was in a building owned by the Smithsonian).

To which Bugman responded, "I AM the federal government."

He then stomped out.

So, Bugman, still in denial? Going to run again? Going to be the federal government again?

What a low moment in the history of the U.S. it was when this uneducated, uncouth lout, liar and thug took the reigns of power. Let's hope it's behind us and that this creep is sentenced for his disgraceful conduct while in office.
