NYT: G.O.P. Finds Hope in Spitzer's Hard Edge (New York State)

G.O.P. Finds Hope in Spitzer's Hard Edge

By PATRICK D. HEALY
Published: January 8, 2006

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's reputation as an aggressive prosecutor precedes him, possibly to his detriment, as he embarks on a run for New York governor.

<snip>

Yet for the first time since Mr. Spitzer declared for office a year ago, New York Republican leaders are now expressing hope that they can exploit what they view as a weak spot in the armor: his temperament, or, more precisely, his temper.

(Our guy in NY, kicks ass, takes
names, gets pissed off, 70% approval)

And, for the first time in a long time, some Democrats appear worried for Mr. Spitzer, and are trying to portray his tough style as an asset. Meanwhile, Mr. Spitzer is expressing new regret about his behavior.

 OK, the Republican Party in New York is officially bankrupt politically. I lived in New York for 10 years, I loved it (almost every minute), and I'll tell you one thing. When you attack a politician for being to angry, especially when that pol delivers big time for everybody and people know it, the response will be  They don't care if he's angry, they care if he gets the job done. This is the equivalent of "Georga Republicans Attack Dem Nominee for Southern Accent."

Bill Weld. Ha Ha he is not as bad as romney but just as stupid. He will run away from Ny like he did from MA.

3. Those "Angry" Democrats. You Know With All The Corruption In The GOP
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 12:13 PM by cryingshame
getting "Angry" makes sense.

The GOP has just used the mediawhores to show how they'll try and take down Spitzer. By trying to start this "Angry" nonsense early and planting it in the public's consciousness now, they have tipped off Spitzer.

Spitzer's team had better get on top if it IMMEDIATELY!

IMO, shine a spotlight on how Republicans constantly call Democrats "angry" when in truth, Democrats are just TRYING TO GET 'ER DONE.

4. I wouldn't underestimate Bill Weld
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 12:16 PM by BlueManDude
he's an intelligent guy who has this odd appeal to blue collar types even though he's the bluest of the blue bloods. my mom was a die hard dem but she loved weld here in mass.

you can also expect a less than united dem leadership in ny with some high profile dems endorsing the gop candisdate.

11. Weld's timing is off, judgment too!
He should have come in and run for governor AS A DEMOCRAT. That would have worked. No way now.

15. Blah...
I don't think Dems have a damn thing to fear with Weld or any other puke running against Spitzer.

God, what a bullshit article.

If the GOP wants to spend money on this race, then all the power to them. This is gonna be a shoe in.

20. having lived under weld and weld lite...
once you scratch the surface, this is what you find...

he's bright, but not too bright. i won't ever forget his trying to bait John Kerry in their last debate by introducing the wife of a slain Springfield cop and asking kerry to explain to her why be believed the man who killed her husband shouldn't suffer the death penalty. kerry demolished weld with his response, saying that the guy was scum and probably beyond rehab, but that thye state should not be in the job of taking lives... weld physically buckled, and the race was over- weld barely campaigned the last week.

weld is not a conservative, progressive or liberal. he is a libertarian. in the end, that became clear here in MA, and he also had no no no coat-tails in any election he headed the ticket.

he's also up to ass in that school scam scandal.

he likes making money a lot.

his wife is a roosevelt, and their parting rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

he may have blue collar appeal, but it won't take much to puncture it... just point out the inevitable conflict b/t his POV and the kind of meat and potato issues that affect blue collar families.\

9. "shooting blanks" You are too kind;)
New York is hard edge, from NYC to the Canadian border and so forth. They're always up for a good fight and when it's meaningful, all the better.

Bill Weld...running for Senate. Nice idea but you need "star" quality to waltz in to NY State and take a Senate seat: e.g., Robert Kennedy, Hillary Clinton. Those are pretty high standards. Weld, goot luck.

Bottom line: Spitzer made promises, kept them, and communicated with the people. If he got pissed off at the disgusting theft by corporate crooks, so what. He expressed our disgust.

Rock on Spitzer.

17. Yes & Spitzer *IS* NY (from NYC to Massena, from Troy to The Falls) ....
in so many ways. He has moxie, is a plain speaker & does what he says he'll do. Most of us NYers don't mind righteous anger and we like feeling that we know where a politician stands. With Spitzer we feel pretty secure that if you ask him a question he'll give you a straighter answer then most politicians. Even way up here on the Canadian border (where it's on the red side) most I have spoken with overall like and truly respect him.

As for a Republican... Republicans running for a statewide position normally have a difficult time of it but with all that's been going on at a national level combined with Pataki fatigue I think they'll find it's a bit more difficult then usual.

21. We all know by now that today's
repukes will say anything to get their foot in the door..but I just saw "Good Night And Good Luck" ..so this isn't only a "today" thing with the recons.

The repugs run on fear..instilling it in others. :scared: We'll see how many New Yorkers are scared of Elliot Spitzer and his so-called "temper".

You should hear what joe mccarthy said about Edward R Murrow..the public wasn't buying.
