Teacher risks jail to give aid in Cuba
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/111-01092006-594890.html
A teacher at George School since 1971, Bradley spoke Friday morning to students and teachers about his personal choice to bring aid to impoverished Cuban citizens last summer in violation of U.S. sanctions. The Pastors for Peace, an interreligious community foundation, organized the effort.

"The government was trying to starve my neighbors and friends," Bradley told a crowd of more than 500 people.

-

But under former President Bill Clinton, Bradley said George School was granted a license to travel to Cuba. He and the school forged a relationship with many citizens there through athletic exchanges and religious trips. The Treasury Department revoked that license in 2004, Bradley said.

-

He could face 10 years in jail and a $250,000 fine. The Courier Times was unsuccessful Friday afternoon in reaching Treasury Department officials for comment.

1. My church had a license to send groups to Cuba, but it expired in
September 2004, by which time the Bushies had put extra restrictions on travel there.

I find it outrageous that U.S. citizens need a "license" to travel anywhere. Our propaganda used to criticize the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries for allowing their citizens to travel only within Eastern Europe.

2. This man is an American hero.
No, he isn't driving around in a Hummer blowing off the heads of women and children, so it will be hard for his TV-trained countrymen to appreciate his works. The Franklin Mint, for instance, won't be die-casting any miniatures in his likeness.

But he is precisely the kind of American we once used to be able to produce in large numbers. That blueprint had been thought lost. Well, here it is...

3. Americans don't care about Cuba
And apparently many don't care about having freedom to travel.

Every time my Senator or Representative comes to town, I carry a sign saying I want freedom to travel to Cuba. I also belong to groups that have been working for years to change the barbaric US/Cuba policy.

Where are other Americans and media who don't give a shit about this issue? I even quit the ACLU because they won't support Americans right to travel to Cuba.

If all other Americans did the same, we'd have a change of policy quicker than you can say "George B* is an asshole!!"

And, I also care about the abridgment of our right to travel unfettered by the government.

I've been to Cuba many times, including with PfP several years ago when they had a license to do so (prior to the new Bush policy).

There's just too much campaign money to be made on both sides of the issue.
