Attorneys: Randy Cunningham Didn't Wear A Wire
http://cbs2.com/topstories/local_story_009224005.html

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Attorneys for Randy "Duke" Cunningham are denying reports that the disgraced ex-congressman wore a wire to surreptiously gather evidence for the U.S. government.

Cunningham's defense attorneys issued a statement Monday denying a report that appeared in Time magazine and prompted fierce speculation in Washington. Time reported Friday that Cunningham wore the wire before he entered his plea on November 28th.

1. So who's telling the truth here?
I'd like to believe that Time is right, but their history doesn't lend much credibility.

2. I find it interesting
Why is it reported that people, who lost control of their bladder when the wire was reported, say he is innocent and there is nothing to worry about. Why was there a collective sigh of relief from republicans when no wire was reported by the defense attorney. That is what I want to know.

3. The more interesting proposition...
...is that Cunningham is lying to his own defense team.

5. Or his defense team is LYING TO THE PUBLIC!
Who knows who got caught up in that mess? Maybe they did, and they've cut their own deal, which involves a whole new level of intrigue...of course, that would be terribly convoluted, but ya never know.

There is no rule against bullshitting outside the courthouse...they can lie on the courthouse steps all day and night if they so desire. It could be that his time in the pen is dependent upon how many fish they can fry, and putting this no wire tale out ensures that the frying pan is full to bursting.

16. Alito: "A defense lawyer's job is to present the best case for the client"
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 09:52 AM by librechik
he said this yesterday. In context, the implication was that in contrast to a judge, for instance, a lawyer can lie, twist and obfuscate all around the law.

These are defense attorneys doing their jobs. Notice, it took a few days to come out. They had to reach a consensus on the best case.

17. Today's LAT disputes that point- no taping of *elected officials*
The lawyers remarks were pointed and didn't actually dispute that he'd been wired-

Cunningham's Lawyer Denies Taping of Officials
Attorney says the ex-congressman didn't collect evidence against lawmakers. He won't specify if his statement also applies to lobbyists.
....
SAN DIEGO — The attorney for Randy "Duke" Cunningham issued a statement Monday denying that the disgraced former congressman had worn a concealed microphone to gather evidence against other public officials but declined to specify whether he wore one in conversations with private individuals.

The statement issued by K. Lee Blalack, attorney for the former eight-term Republican member of the House of Representatives, said that:

"The press, citing unnamed sources, continues to report that Duke Cunningham wore a tape recording device, or wire, to surreptitiously gather evidence on behalf of the government. This story is false.

"Duke has never worn a body wire during any conversations with his former congressional colleagues or any other public official, and he has not surreptitiously gathered evidence against any public officials."
