Iran set to resume nuclear work (removed seals)
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 03:33 AM by Wilms

Tuesday, 10 January 2006, 08:14 GMT

Iran has removed seals from a nuclear facility and will begin research there in the coming hours, a top Iranian nuclear official has announced.

The move ends a two-year suspension of research, and could result in Tehran being referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.

Germany on Monday described Iran's planned move as "very, very ominous".

Western countries fear Iran's nuclear programme could be used to make atomic bombs, but Tehran denies such a goal.

TEHRAN, Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Iran removed seals on its nuclear research sites on Tuesday, despite international calls to refrain from resuming sensitive nuclear work, officials said.

Mohammad Saeedi, deputy chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, told reporters here that the research work would be resumed later Tuesday under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog.

This move came after Iran announced last week it would resume work on the nuclear fuel research under the UN supervision, which it suspended two and a half years ago.

Iran's announcement drew threats from the United States, which accuses Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons under the cover of peaceful civilian usage, to refer its nuclear case to the UN Security Council for punitive actions.

2. Israel has nukes; as does Russia, Pakistan, India, the EU
these guys are surrounded by nukes. Who can blame'em.

Not to mention the good ol US of A, which used 'tactical' nukes in Iraq (to the detriment of a lot of vets and others- non US nationals).

4. Give me time, my friend, and I shall
find you a reliable link or two. I'm referring to the low grade nuclear material used in the Gulf War 'Desert Storm' back when daddy Bush was Pres. These 'low grade nukes' were used in bunker busting bombs and armor penetrating missiles.

As I recall, there was a lot of illness attributable to the nuclear residue; the illness was picked up by Iraqis and our own US Soldiers, family birth defects &c.

Will report back when I have the cites.

6. You are talking about Depleted uranium (unfortunately called DU)
There are no illnesses attributable to DU through "nuclear residue". DU is a very weak alpha emitter. It is however a toxic heavy metal.

C'mon folks, didn't you pay attention in high school chemistry class?

10. Put up an article explaining the radioactivity of DU as a suspected cause.
You may not have understood.

AngryAmish was pointing out the common misunderstanding about DU. IT IS a problem, but it doesn't do the damage radiologically. It does it chemically.

Not a huge difference if you're ill from it, but an important one.

9. Iran may be a bugbear
unless one is an Israeli. Then one must leave Tel Aviv for fear of becoming a grey stain on a wall.
