WASHINGTON, Jan 10 (Reuters) - If Iran continues on its current nuclear course, it will leave the international community no choice but to refer Tehran to the U.N. Security Council for possible actions, the White House said on Tuesday.

The United States was reacting after Iran removed U.N. seals at its Natanz uranium enrichment plant and resumed nuclear fuel research on Tuesday.

"If the regime in Iran continues on the current course and fails to abide by its international obligations there is no other choice but to refer the matter to the Security Council," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

He also said that if Iran started nuclear enrichment and reprocessing it would be considered a "serious escalation."

9. White House: Iran could face UN Security Council
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States called Iran's renewed work on nuclear fuel on Tuesday a serious concern and said the international community would have no choice but to seek U.N. Security Council action if Tehran persisted.

"If the regime in Iran continues on the current course and fails to abide by its international obligations there is no other choice but to refer the matter to the Security Council," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

But U.S. officials said referring Iran to the council -- for removing U.N. seals at its Natanz uranium enrichment plant and resuming nuclear fuel research -- was not definite and it was unclear whether Russia and China would support this move.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday about Iran but he said he was not "presupposing" how other countries would vote.

"We think that ultimately this will end up in the Security Council just because of Iran's past behavior on this," McCormack said.

The White House says there is growing international support for action by the U.N. Security Council on Iran's nuclear program.

The Bush administration says Tehran is showing it cannot be trusted to abide by its international obligations.

Iran says it is resuming nuclear fuel research. The Bush administration warns it could face serious consequences.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan says the issue is a matter of trust.

But Russia and China have indicated they are reluctant to take Iran before the Security Council, where they have permanent seats and veto power. During a briefing for reporters, McClellan said only that discussions with Beijing and Moscow are ongoing.

Britain says it is profoundly concerned about Iran

Britain says Iran's decision to restart nuclear enrichment related activities is a "profound concern" that could lead to U.N. Security Council action.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has appeared in parliament to explain what he sees as a serious breach by Iran of its nuclear non-proliferation agreements.

"This morning the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed, I regret to say, that Iran had broken seals at nuclear facilities including its uranium enrichment facility at Natanz with a view to resuming research and development, including the introduction of uranium hexafluoride into the centrifuges," said Mr. Straw. "This is enrichment. This is a profound concern."

Straw says he will be meeting his counterparts from France and Germany to discuss referral of Iran to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions.

25. I hate to say it . . .
. . . but it seems to me that the US attacking Iran really will open the door to the possibility of WWIII, or even if that doesn't happen, it can really hurt the US far more than the Iraq war. Two Trillion dollars for the Iraq war, and they were a highly depleted military and a highly depleted country. Iran has a much stronger military and the Straits of Hormuz. Plus the possibility of Russia and China backing Iran is not non-existent.

34. Who are we to judge, when it comes to nukes??
I believe Iran has the right to pursue nuclear energy, just as any nation with the capability has. A part of me also believes they have every right to also join the 'nuclear club' of nations with atomic weapons capabilities. Iran is a sovereign nation, yes?

That does not mean to imply that I would agree with Iran's decisions or actions to engage in the research, development, production, or deployment of nuclear weapons. I hate nukes. I remember the Friday morning air-raid alarms in Orange County, and the 'duck and cover' drills under our 20 Kiloton proof school desks.

Just that, as a citizen in one sovereign nation, one that happens to maintain a significantly high number of nuclear weapons, I feel it is disingenuous for us to regard our political/economic structure worthy of such protection, while simultaneously deeming the same power among 'lesser' nations, cultures, or ideologies, "threatening".

Whom is threatening who, here?

44. Yeah, well just let him try.
Bush is shooting off his big mouth, again. This is getting familiar. Remember last year?

I read in some little obscure web site (around October of last year) that Bush was going to try to invade Iran. The author said, just wait: around Xmas, the propaganda machine is going into high gear. The war drums will start beating.

The author was right! Sure enough, mid-January (of 2005) the propaganda started "heating up". Things were getting serious! Rice was called in "patch things up", envoys were sent here and there. Lots of melodrama. People here at the DU were biting their nails, wondering when the bombs were going to start falling.

I watched this development very carefully. Next, Russia appeared on the scene. They sold missiles to Iran. These were highly publicized stories. China got involved. Even India was involved on the fringes. Hugo Chavez made a trip to Iran.

The fervor started to die down. The U.S. backed off. Now, here we are again. What happened?

I believe the U.S. DESPERATELY, maniacally wants to bomb Iran. But the rest of the world is keeping us in check. I believe the heavy hitters have warned Bush not to do it.
