Iraq Braces for Civil War

http://www.menewsline.com/stories/2006/january/01_11_2.html

IRAQ BRACES FOR CIVIL WAR

BAGHDAD -- Less than a month after parliamentary elections, Iraq has begun to brace for civil war.

Officials said the resurgence of suicide bombings and other violence could mark the start of a civil war that would pit Sunnis against Shi'ites and Kurds in Iraq. They said the Sunnis have sought to infiltrate and control the nation's security forces to support such an effort.

On Jan. 8, the Iraqi Defense Ministry issued a statement that warned of a civil war between the nation's three main ethnic communities. The ministry said the war could be sparked by the current outbreak of terrorism.

After a lull of more than a month, Sunni insurgents have launched a wave of suicide bombings, mostly in the Baghdad area. So far, about 250 people have been killed over the last week.

14. "they can't do any worse"
The new program for the White House to get good intelligence is they are going to put their full and complete trust in torture. From now on all White House staff meetings will be episodes of torture to extract accurate information. This policy has to be used because the old ways don't work in this White House.

11. Actually, it's in full swing as we speak.
Although, I defer to the opinion of Juan Cole - he conjectures that this is so, IIRCC.

13. They say Civil War is inevitable.
I have spoken with three different people who are from Iraq and now live in the Detroit area. Each of them have told me Iraq will turn to civil war as soon as the Americans pull out.
It sounds to me like America has to keep troops over there for decades to come. But, what the heck, we still have troops in Germany, Italy, and Japan. Even 60 years after World War Two ended.

17. I think that if (when) that happens it will be spontaneous;
The whole country will explode and all sides will carry out waves of genocidal killing sprees. The US troops will be in the way and be caught up in the mess. No one will be safe. IMHO

with napalm and white phosphorus like Falluja (sp) and get rid of all those pesky Iraqis so we could just get on with grabbing up that oil. This civil war stuff is really cramping our style. We just didn't shock and Awe them right the first time. Why slowly torture and imprison the poor bastards; just blow them off the face of the earth. :nuke: (sarcasm)

It's porno to BushCo. Bottom line. They get paid to destroy, and laugh at us as they do it. Remember, paid by our tax dollars.

ME Newsline strikes me as a U.S. military propaganda machine. Go to its site and click on "about us."

I don't know, you guys. Although I think he's pretty emotionally involved in what's going on in Iraq, Robert Fisk strikes me as the real McCoy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Fisk He's lived in the ME for 30 years and has been an unembedded journalist there throughout this occupation. Not too long ago, he said in an NPR interview that the Iraqis have no intention of a civil war. He said that it's a concept being created by the West. I'm not much of an expert myself. All I know is that this war is based on lies and misinformation and has an entirely bullshit agenda. I would not be surprised to learn that the MIC wants to perpetuate threat of civil war to justify the continuing occupation. From what I got from the Fisk interview, the insurgency is all about the occupation of U.S. and allied forces, not between the Shi'ites and Sunnis. But like I said, I'm no expert. Maybe you guys know more that I don't. I just think Fisk knows what he's talking about and would trust him way more than a blurb from some outfit I've never heard of.

That's my food for thought.

Peace,
AL

27. Man! I'm having a difficult time...
imagining the tragedy that may unfold there due to George Bush and the corporations who were/are robbing that country blind. They have actually started a civil war.

Our civil war was so incredibly devastating, why would we want the same for any other country? I'm just mistified...
