Two to stand trial in 'Downing Street Memo' leak

Two to stand trial in 'Downing Street Memo' leak

Two men who leaked a document suggesting U.S. President George W. Bush considered bombing Al-Jazeera television have to stand trial.

The memo says Blair dissuaded Bush from bombing Al-Jazeera TV in Qatar (CP File Photo)
David Keogh, a British civil servant, is accused of passing a memo to Leo O'Connor, a former parliamentary researcher. The memo, which came to be known as the Downing Street Memo, was then leaked to a British newspaper last November. It alleged that Bush spoke of targeting Al-Jazeera's headquarters in Qatar in a meeting he had with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the White House in 2004.

Keogh has been accused of "a damaging disclosure" of international information. O'Connor, a former employee of a Labour MP, is accused of receiving and releasing illegally disclosed information.

Both men have been charged with violations of the Official Secrets Act.

6. I think it only muddies the waters and dilutes the importance of DSM.

When it reaches DSMIII it will have "jumped the shark" for the general public.

9. Then they should be distinguished with different monikers.
Want proof? When was the last time you heard anything about DSM? How will adding confusion to the discussion help?

8. !!
What the Fuck has happened to Britain?

I mean, WTF?

They are heroes. They have proven that two leaders of two countries committed a war crime...invasion of a country on a pretext

16. Britain has always had repressive
secrecy laws. But they are very hard to enforce, with juries notoriously unwilling to convict people who have leaked in the public interest.

These charges show the govt either hasn't learned its lesson or that it is trying desperately to enforce a practically unenforceable law.

Craig Murray's recent leaks have gone unpunished - the govt knows it will never get a jury to convict someone who has exposed the govts role in torture - Catherine Gunn's charges were dropped once it seemed likely that a court case would reveal the Attorney General's legal advice about the Iraq invasion.

I doubt this will get to court and, if it does, it will be very damaging for the government and very unlikely to result in convictions.

14. Remember the Al Jazeera location that was hit in Bagdad at the beginning
of the war, after they had twice called in their coordinates to the Coalition forces? The cameraman and another reporter were on top of a building that got hit.I do not have the link, but it should not be to hard to find.
