EU leaders consider Iran action
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 11:07 PM by cal04
Britain, France and Germany may meet on Thursday to discuss Iran's resumption of nuclear research. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw expressed his "profound concern" and said taking the matter to the UN Security Council was on the agenda. "We'll make a decision then ... but I think it's clear the direction in which we're thinking," Mr Straw said.

Tehran denies accusations of trying to build atomic bombs, saying it wants to produce nuclear energy only. 'Huge regret' On Tuesday, Iran removed UN seals from equipment at Natanz facility. UN nuclear chief Mohamed ElBaradei said Tehran would start small-scale nuclear enrichment. The move was condemned by the US and European countries, which fear Iran is seeking to produce atomic bombs.

"This is a matter which has to be resolved by peaceful means, but it will involve a good deal of diplomatic and other pressure on Iran," said Mr Straw. He confirmed he would meet French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany and Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, on Thursday.

"We have shown our good faith in Europe over the last two and a half years. I do not believe we could have done more to reach out to the Iranians," he said. Mr Straw added it was a matter of "huge regret" that Iran had renewed its nuclear programme, but said he hoped they would reconsider.

1. I have seen enough of how the Brits solve things by "peaceful
means". Ask any Iraqi.

2. The reason's gotta be that EU doesn't want * to end up with Iran's oil.
It's like the NY Lottery motto: You gotta be in it to win it.

3. The UN removed the seals, NOT Iran. Iran is legally allowed
to do nuclear research.

9. True, but irrelevant in this case
I was pointing out that it's a mistake to dismiss those three European countries as insignificant, modern versions of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick. If they choose to throw their weight around in this particular matter, especially if they act in concert, that weight is pretty hefty already, and they have the resources to make it a lot heftier.

13. Hmm. Reminds me of the last time I negotiated a bar fight
Didn't work then, either. Negotiation is meaningless when dealing with psychos.

Ahmadinejad is an ultra-right religious fundie with a terrorist background, who not only thinks Israel should be flattened, but says it clearly and loudly and often. Iran has recently acquired the missiles needed to deliver the flattening punch, and now is about to acquire the nukes.

Think about how WWI got started over a small incident and then tell me how a nuclear duel between Iran and Israel doesn't have the capability to spiral into the closing scene of Dr. Strangelove. HELLO FELLOW PROGRESSIVES! WAKE THE FUCK UP!

Peace.
