US Jews weigh in ahead of Alito hearings
Amid the Hanukka parties and the New Year festivities, the organized Jewish community has been gearing up to make itself heard on the next nominee for the US Supreme Court.

Several Jewish organizations already have spoken out against Judge Samuel Alito Jr., who will go before the Senate Judiciary Committee for confirmation hearings this week. Those groups and others are pushing key lawmakers to ask pointed questions about Alito's record on abortion and the separation of church and state.

The goal is to prevent the feeling many in Washington had last year about the nomination of Chief Justice John Roberts - that it was a fait accompli.

Alito is considered a more controversial jurist, with a longer record that has raised concerns among liberal groups, including the National Council of Jewish Women and the Union for Reform Judaism. Both organizations, who announced their opposition to Alito last year, are getting members in touch with key senators, pushing them to reject Alito.

1. I was a delegate at the URJ Biennial
I was a delegate at the URJ Biennial where the URJ resolution was adopted. It was a great debate between Elliot Minceberg, counsel for PFAW, and a law clerk for Alito.

12. do you ever post anything that isn't mockery and disruption?
I admit that I haven't made a point of reading all of your posts. But it does seem that those that I have read mostly consist of you mocking progressive concerns and sentiments.

Why is that?

5. Anarchist atheists of Norse descent
don't like Alito much either. I guess we need a really BROAD coalition to bring him down.

6. LMAO!
Somehow, I doubt we are the only groups and there really is a broad coalition. Let's hope those holding the hearings hear the will of the people and not the will of the "base."

7. actually if the democrats stood together on this
they could stop it

problem is I doubt they will

so the question is, will the moderate republicans do the right thing?

8. Don't sell them out just yet...
You know the Jews* run Congress (wink, wink), so, if we have our way, he will not be confirmed.

The real issue is the moderate Democrats taking a stand. They should not worry about what the right-wing will think or the "leftists." I have always seen 'moderate' Democrats as more willing to 'buck' the system, than I have seen 'moderate' Republicans to 'buck' the system.

In all honesty 'still_one,' I don't think this is a Democratic/Republican thing, it is an American thing. The majority does not seem to want Alito. Will the Congress follow the will of the people, or the "base?

9. It shouldn't be a dem/repug thing, but the media sure is making it one
I also agree with you that moderate dems are more likely to buck the system than the repugs, especially with this guys paper trail

I feel confident that both my senators, boxer and feinstein will vote against the nomination, but I do NOT feel that confident about some of the more conservative democrats such as nelson from Nebraska

I am not selling them out, but for me this is a major test for them to prove themselves

10. Keep the faith!
We have a while to go.

I apologize if I was accusing you of "selling them out"...that can't be done until you tear them apart despite their past records.

15. It will be interesting to see what Sen. Ron Wyden (D - Oregon) does.
He is Jewish, I believe.

Gordon Smith (R - OR) will vote for him, I'm sure.
