http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060111/wl_afp/usiraqmilitarypolitics_060111064909WASHINGTON (AFP) - Pentagon officials will hold a closed door congressional briefing to provide lawmakers details about a Defense Department study on the lifesaving benefits of body armor worn by US troops serving in Iraq.
The New York Times last week disclosed the findings of the classified report, which concluded that as many as 80 percent of the marines killed in Iraq from upper body wounds could have survived had they had extra body armor.
After a barrage of news reports and a chorus of calls from opposition Democrats demanding details about the study, Senator John Warner, Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced that US Army and Marine Corps officials would brief lawmakers privately on Wednesday.
Democrats accused the administration of President George W. Bush of callousness for failing to make the equipment available to all US troops fighting in Iraq.
