Senate minority leader says Democrats can gain in "red states"

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Democrats can win in Republican-dominated states such as Utah by fighting what Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid characterized as GOP corruption in Washington during a stop here on his "red state" tour Wednesday.

Reid, D-Nev., visited Salt Lake City on the tour, which also includes stops in Phoenix, Denver, Pocatello, Idaho, and Omaha, Neb., in an effort to lure rural voters back to the Democratic Party.

He was accompanied in Salt Lake City by U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson, Utah's only Democratic member of Congress.

The senator said the Democratic Party lost the 2002 presidential election largely because it didn't campaign hard enough in rural areas.

1. The 9/11 "fear factor" played a role too. Along with...
Diebold and Fraud by Jeb in Florida.

2. That's what HOward Dean's been saying too!
I know I remember hearing prominent Dems saying we can WIN without the red States...we don't need them!

I think Howard was the first Dem to promote campainging in "red States", and I think he and Reid are right on this one! Nobody like to be ignored!

6. So did I, for many reasons, but it didn't happen. We have to deal
the hand we've been dealt! I really do believe the Dems MUST pay attention to ALL States!

"You have to really stretch things to call it a newspaper," Reid said.
