Leaked memo sparks rancor in Senate
WASHINGTON -- The festering quarrel over the Senate investigation into pre-war US intelligence on Iraq flared up yesterday as Republicans and Democrats traded charges of politicizing the probe and engaging in office espionage.

At issue was a draft strategy memorandum written by a Democratic staff member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Leaked to the media Tuesday night, it laid out how the party could steer the probe in an effort to produce the information most damaging to the Bush administration.

"Intelligence issues are clearly secondary to the public's concern regarding the insurgency in Iraq," the memo concluded. "Yet, we have an important role to play in the revealing misleading -- if not flagrantly dishonest methods and motives -- of the senior administration officials who made the case for a unilateral, preemptive war."

1. Was some right wingnut actually sneaking around in
the middle of the night? How did they get this staffer's draft of a memo?

Apparently, some wing-nut digging through garbage cans.
I do wish they'd investigate the source of the leak. It would look pretty bad if Republicans ordered an aide to go through Dems trash every night, and I've no doubt that's what happened.

7. Could anyone actually be so (both) dishonest and stupid
as to have done something like that?

Do you have any more information about it?

I'm laughing out loud!

2. I read the memo...
...it talked about how to overcome the obvious stonewalling of the Bushbots. You want that known far and wide, fine, keep whining and hoping no one actually reads the damned thing.

3. Hagel last night on CNBC said will follow to WH...
Hagel said last night on CNBC that the memo was misleading because he understood that the (he is a member) comittee would follow the investigation to the WH if it ked there. Roberts apparently forgot to tell Hagel that he did not beleive the comittee was authorized to do that.

12. Don't kid yourself
He's the one who won two stunning upset victories in Nebraska on the voting machines he's part owner of. He's the one who withheld (hid) the information about his ownership stake in ES&S on his financial disclosure forms to the Senate.

14. Thanks for bringing this up.
What really disturbs me about the recent positive focus on Chuck "ES&S" Hagel is the distraction from BBV issues it causes.

And, IIRC, Hagel wants to "run for president" (steal the election) in 2008.

HAGEL IS NOT A GOOD MAN, PEOPLE! Remember Eloriel's words. She's on the trolley on this one.

15. I agree, the memo makes the dems look good
It proves that they are not part of the coverup.

Also, it shows they are sincere in their concerns. They don't talk about misleading anyone, they talk about the best way to get to the truth, despite the republican obstructionism.

9. PREDICTION
The leak of this memo is going to be the WH's excuse for not releasing material to the investigation commitee. They will say "We wanted to cooperate, but obviously the Dems can't be trusted not to politicize the information we give them, so we're not going to release anything to them."

11. Tuffski....chitski...
This whole thing sounds like an effort to discredit Dems on the Senate Intelligence Committee because they care about finding out the truth.

Now they're more determined than ever.

Strategist warns Bush could fall in polls with Democratic nominee
Memo: 'This race is likely to be very tight'
From Dana Bash
CNN Washington Bureau
snip
"After the Democratic nominee is all but certain in the late winter/early spring, it would not be surprising for us to fall behind for a bit," writes Dowd.

"Once the Democratic nominee is all but assured, that person will receive a deluge of positive press at least for a couple of weeks, and this will be temporarily reflected in public opinion polls."

The Bush strategist says "this race is likely to be very tight and go down to the wire," because of the "nature of a divided and polarized electorate."
...

It's really funny watching them dance around trying to catch the dems in some "improper" activity. ANYTHING to get the light off the real issues involved .. tedious .. they know what's coming.

13. Wait and see...
Let's see how the media whores play out this story about Democrats when just last year a CD was found with explicit instructions encouraging Republicans to exploit the so-called 'war on terror' for political gains. If I recall, that 'controversy' remained a hot topic in the mainstream media for all about a week, give or take four days.
